Chittagonian interpreting and translation

Chittagonian, known to its speakers as Chatgaiya, is the everyday language of the Chattogram region of south-east Bangladesh. Many people from this area understand far less standard Bengali than an outsider might expect, and our Chittagonian interpreters close that gap.

Chittagonian is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language of the Bengali-Assamese branch, spoken around the port city of Chattogram (Chittagong) and southwards towards Cox's Bazar. Inside Bangladesh it is often called a dialect of Bengali, yet it is widely treated as a separate language, with large differences in sound system, grammar and everyday vocabulary. Speakers of standard Bengali from Dhaka frequently report that they struggle to follow it.

The language is mainly spoken rather than written. Schooling, newspapers and official business in the region use standard Bengali, so most Chittagonian speakers switch between the two, with varying confidence in the standard form. Rohingya, spoken across the border in Myanmar, is its nearest relative, and speakers of the two can often understand each other to a good degree. Workers from the Chattogram region form sizeable communities in the Gulf states and Malaysia, with smaller groups in Europe and North America.

How we help

Chittagonian services

SILA Linguists®

Chittagonian interpreters and transcription services from SILA Linguists®

Chittagonian is the everyday speech of Chattogram and the coast down to Cox's Bazar, and its sounds, grammar and vocabulary differ so much from standard Bengali that many Dhaka speakers find it hard to follow. SILA Linguists® provides Chittagonian interpreters and transcribers for health, legal and public services throughout the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand, including support for workers who have spent years in the Gulf or Malaysia. We ask which district a client comes from so the match is right the first time.

Chittagonian interpreting where a Bengali interpreter falls short

A Bengali interpreter can be enough for a confident, school-educated client, but older people, those with little formal education and anyone in a stressful situation are far better served by a Chittagonian speaker. We provide face-to-face interpreters for maternity care, police and court interviews, immigration and asylum appointments and social care visits, plus telephone interpreting around the clock, every day of the year, and video interpreting on the SILA Linguists® app or your platform.

Clients commonly use standard Bengali terms for official matters and Chittagonian for personal ones. Our interpreters move between the two without correcting the speaker, and a female or male interpreter can be requested for intimate health or family discussions. They are also used to the Gulf Arabic and Malay words that returning migrant workers sometimes bring into their speech.

Translation for Chittagonian speakers

Chittagonian has no settled spelling, so written translation is almost always into standard Bengali in the Bengali script. Certified translation of Bangladeshi birth certificates, national identity cards, passports, court papers and employment records is done from Bengali, with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office and courts. Bengali-language papers for North American authorities are certified to their rules, by US certificate of accuracy or a Canadian provincially certified translator.

Where readers have limited literacy, we record spoken Chittagonian audio for health messages, appointment reminders and safety instructions. This is often more effective than any leaflet. Short recorded messages in Chittagonian can be shared by text or played in waiting rooms.

Chittagonian transcription and language analysis

Police interviews, witness statements, phone recordings and audio health information are transcribed with regular time markers and put into English, with any switches to standard Bengali clearly marked. Chittagonian sits close to Rohingya, and that closeness can matter in asylum claims. For such cases SILA Linguists® offers language analysis (LADO) carried out by specialist analysts.

Sectors we support in Chittagonian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Chittagonian linguists can support maternity and community health teams, police forces, criminal courts, immigration lawyers, workers' welfare organisations, social services and public health campaigns. Book once and one project team handles everything, with vetted linguists, signed NDAs and UK GDPR compliance from start to finish. Chittagonian interpreting is available for immigration hearings, hospitals and family services in the US and Canada, with relay through Bengali where helpful.

Good to know

Working with Chittagonian

Interpreting

  • Do not assume that a Bengali interpreter will be enough. For an older person, someone with little formal education or anyone in a stressful setting such as a hospital or police interview, a Chittagonian speaker is the safer match. Ask the client which district they come from; it helps us choose the right interpreter.
  • Many clients will use standard Bengali terms for official matters and Chittagonian for personal ones, so a good interpreter moves between both without correcting the speaker. Telephone and video interpreting suit short appointments and follow-up calls, and an interpreter of a preferred gender can be requested.

Translation

  • Written translation for Chittagonian speakers is almost always into standard Bengali in the Bengali script, because there is no settled Chittagonian spelling. Certified translation of Bangladeshi birth certificates, passports and court papers is done from Bengali. Where a reader has limited literacy, we can record spoken Chittagonian audio for health messages or instructions, and transcribe recorded interviews.
