Face-to-face
Sundanese interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Sundanese is the language of West Java and Banten in Indonesia and the country's second largest regional language. We provide Sundanese interpreters and translators, alongside Indonesian.
Basa Sunda
sunSundanese is an Austronesian language spoken in the western third of Java, including cities such as Bandung, Bogor and parts of Banten. It is distinct from Javanese, its neighbour to the east, although both have speech levels influenced by older court culture. Most Sundanese speakers also speak Indonesian, the national language, which is used in school, government and business.
Sundanese uses polite (lemes) and ordinary (loma) speech levels, and the choice depends on age and social relationship. Dialects include the Priangan variety around Bandung, regarded as the standard, and those of Banten, Cirebon and the north coast.

Sundanese is the home language of a very large population in West Java and Banten, from Bandung and Bogor to the Cirebon coast, and of many Indonesians who now live abroad. SILA Linguists® supplies Sundanese interpreters, translators and transcribers to healthcare providers, researchers, cultural organisations, immigration advisers and families throughout the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Most speakers also use Indonesian, so we help you decide when a Sundanese specialist will make a real difference.
An Indonesian interpreter often suits younger, school-educated clients, but older relatives and anyone discussing intimate health or family matters may find Sundanese far easier. We offer face-to-face Sundanese interpreting where linguists are available locally, and telephone interpreting at any hour, every day of the year. Video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform is frequently the fastest option.
Sundanese speech is layered: the polite lemes register is used with elders and strangers, the plainer loma register among equals. Our interpreters choose the level that fits the person in front of them, and they recognise the Priangan standard around Bandung as well as the speech of Banten and the north coast. Female or male interpreters can be arranged on request.
Everyday Sundanese is written in the Latin alphabet, while the revived Aksara Sunda script appears on signage, in schools and in cultural publishing and is supported in Unicode. We translate leaflets, outreach material, research questionnaires, heritage texts and exhibition captions into and out of English, in whichever script the project calls for.
Indonesian civil documents are issued in Indonesian, so certified translation of birth certificates, family cards and diplomas normally works from Indonesian. We supply those with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, and we can handle any Sundanese material in the same file. Pairing the Indonesian and Sundanese work in one project keeps names, addresses and terminology identical across every translated page.
Academic fieldwork, oral histories, recorded performances and community interviews can be transcribed in Sundanese with time codes and a side-by-side English translation. Our transcribers mark switches into Indonesian or Javanese, which are common in conversation, so the record remains clear for analysis or subtitling.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Sundanese linguists can support hospitals and GP practices, family and social services, universities and research teams, museums and cultural festivals, and immigration practitioners. SILA Linguists® gives you one coordinator, carefully vetted specialists and strict confidentiality under signed agreements and UK GDPR.
