Indonesian is a standardised form of Malay that was adopted as the language of national unity before independence and became the official language on independence. It is the language of government, education, business and the media throughout Indonesia, and the second language of most Indonesians, whose first language is often Javanese, Sundanese or another regional language.

Indonesian and Malaysian Malay are mutually intelligible to a large degree, but they differ in vocabulary, the spelling of loanwords and some idioms, so business and official texts should be written for the right country. Spoken Indonesian also has a marked difference between formal language and colloquial speech, with Jakarta colloquial Indonesian especially common in media and among younger speakers.

How we help

Indonesian services

SILA Linguists®

Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) interpreting and translation by SILA Linguists®

Indonesia is one of the world's largest markets, and Bahasa Indonesia is the language of its government, schools, business and media. SILA Linguists® provides Indonesian interpreters, translators and localisation specialists for investors, universities, energy and maritime companies, public services and families across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Most Indonesians speak a regional language at home, such as Javanese or Sundanese, so for older or rural clients we ask whether that language would serve them better.

Indonesian interpreting for negotiations and public services

Indonesian conversation is courteous and often indirect, and disagreement may be expressed very softly. Our interpreters convey that accurately, so the speaker does not sound vague and the listener does not miss a polite refusal. This matters in trade and investment talks, mining, energy and shipping project meetings, and student recruitment fairs, where we provide consecutive and escort interpreters as well as simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting for conferences.

Public-sector Indonesian interpreting covers hospital appointments, immigration and family visa interviews, legal advice and social services, face to face, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, and by telephone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Some Indonesians have a single name and others several given names without a family name; interpreters help staff record names correctly.

Certified Indonesian translation and localisation

Indonesian civil documents use fixed terminology: the Akta Kelahiran (birth certificate), Kartu Keluarga (family card), marriage certificates and academic transcripts. Our certified Indonesian translation keeps seals and signatures clearly described and carries a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, universities and courts, and by employers. When Indonesian records must satisfy Australian, Canadian or US rules, we arrange certification accordingly, for example through a NAATI-certified translator. Because Indonesian has no grammatical gender or tenses in the European sense, translators make time and gender explicit in English where the source implies them.

For businesses, we translate contracts, tenders, technical and safety documentation, and localise websites, apps and marketing specifically for Indonesian readers, following current official spelling. Indonesian and Malaysian Malay are close but not interchangeable, so we never recycle text written for one market into the other.

Indonesian transcription

We transcribe Indonesian interviews, focus groups, recorded meetings and media with time stamps, translating into English where required. Colloquial Jakarta speech differs markedly from formal Indonesian, and our transcribers capture both registers faithfully.

Sectors we support in Indonesian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Indonesian linguists can support investors and trading companies, energy, mining and maritime operators, universities and education agents, technology firms, NHS and private healthcare, immigration advisers and law firms. With SILA Linguists® you work with one project team, vetted linguists bound by confidentiality agreements, and data protection under UK GDPR. Indonesian interpreters can work with courts, immigration advisers and universities in Australia, the United States and Canada as well as in Britain.

Good to know

Working with Indonesian

Interpreting

  • For almost all Indonesian clients, Indonesian is a safe choice. For elderly people from rural Java or Sunda, or in emotional settings, it may help to ask whether Javanese or Sundanese would be easier.
  • Indonesian conversation tends to be polite and indirect, and disagreement may be expressed softly. Interpreters convey this accurately without making the speaker sound vague.
  • Indonesian interpreters are available for business meetings, conferences and remote simultaneous interpreting, as well as for public-sector work by video and telephone.
  • Indonesian names vary: some people have a single name only, while others use several given names without a family name. Interpreters can explain this so that forms are completed correctly.

Translation

  • Indonesian uses the Latin alphabet with spelling governed by the official EYD (Ejaan yang Disempurnakan) rules. It has no grammatical gender or verb tenses in the European sense, so translators must take care to make time references and gender explicit in English where needed.
  • Indonesian official documents such as the Akta Kelahiran (birth certificate), Kartu Keluarga (family card) and academic transcripts have fixed terminology. We provide certified translations and keep the formatting of seals and signatures clear.
  • For localisation, we write specifically for the Indonesian market rather than adapting Malaysian Malay text, and vice versa.
