Slovak Sign Language is close to Czech Sign Language, reflecting a shared history, but it has its own vocabulary and is treated as a separate language. It also shares roots with Hungarian and Austrian sign languages from the Austro-Hungarian period.

The Slovak Act on the sign language of Deaf persons recognises sign language as the language of Deaf people in Slovakia. The Act uses the older term posunková reč; the Deaf community now generally uses slovenský posunkový jazyk. A national Deaf union represents the community.

Many Slovak Deaf people have worked in the Czech Republic, Austria, the UK or Ireland. Some have learned the local sign language, and some prefer Czech Sign Language interpreters because of the close relationship. Asking the person directly is the best way to find the right match.

How we help

Slovak Sign Language services

SILA Linguists®

Slovak Sign Language interpreters and signed video with SILA Linguists®

Slovenský posunkový jazyk, Slovak Sign Language, is close to Czech Sign Language through shared history and shares roots with Hungarian and Austrian signing from the Austro-Hungarian period, yet it has its own vocabulary and is treated as a separate language. Slovak law recognises sign language as the language of Deaf people in Slovakia, using the older term posunková reč. SILA Linguists® arranges Slovak Sign Language interpreting, signed video and captions for employers, hospitals, legal advisers and social services, in Slovakia and for Slovak Deaf people who have worked in the Czech Republic, Austria, the UK or Ireland.

Slovak Sign Language interpreting, at work and beyond

A Czech Sign Language interpreter may be acceptable to some Slovak Deaf people, but we ask first; others want Slovak signing, particularly for legal rights, medical consent and employment terms. Some Slovak Deaf people abroad have learned the local sign language, and a few prefer Czech, so we note each person's choice for future bookings.

We provide Slovak Sign Language interpreting on site and through video remote interpreting with an interpreter based in Slovakia, which suits short appointments such as GP visits, calls with HR or a quick meeting with a solicitor. In long or technical assignments, such as disciplinary hearings, training days or court proceedings, two interpreters work in turns so that accuracy holds throughout. Social services meetings involving Deaf parents can include a Deaf relay where helpful.

Slovak Deaf workers abroad often arrive through agencies, and we can support group inductions with Slovak Sign Language interpreters, then keep the same interpreter for later reviews so that trust builds over time.

Written Slovak into signed video

Deaf translators record Slovak Sign Language versions of contracts, payslip explanations, health advice and social services letters, and signed Slovak clips can be written up in Slovak or English. Slovak birth, marriage and education certificates are certified by our Slovak translators.

Because the Deaf community now generally uses the term slovenský posunkový jazyk, our written material about the language follows current usage rather than the older legal wording.

Slovak captions and transcripts

Slovak or English captions can be added to training films and recorded meetings, and transcripts capture both signed and spoken contributions, each one proofread by a person.

Settings for our linguists in Slovak Sign Language

Our vetted, trained and qualified Slovak Sign Language interpreters can support employers, healthcare providers, legal practitioners and social services. Requests are handled by one SILA Linguists® coordinator, interpreters are vetted, and Slovak Deaf clients' privacy is protected by non-disclosure agreements and UK GDPR.
