Sindhi is a north-western Indo-Aryan language with a long literary tradition. In Pakistan it is the provincial language of Sindh, used in education, administration and media there, while Urdu is the national language and English an official language. In India, Sindhi is one of the scheduled languages, spoken mainly by families who moved from Sindh at Partition and their descendants.

Dialects include Vicholi, around Hyderabad, which is the basis of the standard, Siroli (Siraiki-influenced northern Sindhi), Lari in the south, and Thari towards the Indian border. Kutchi is closely related and is sometimes considered a Sindhi dialect. Pakistani and Indian Sindhi have diverged somewhat in vocabulary, with more Farsi and Arabic words in Pakistan and more Hindi influence in India.

How we help

Sindhi services

SILA Linguists®

Sindhi interpreting and translation services by SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Sindhi interpreters and translators for families from Sindh in Pakistan, Sindhi communities across India and a trading diaspora stretching from Dubai to Hong Kong. We can support healthcare providers, lawyers, immigration advisers, businesses and community groups in the UK and across North America, Australia and New Zealand. Pakistani and Indian Sindhi have drifted apart in vocabulary, with more Arabic and Farsi borrowings on one side of the border and more Hindi on the other, so we ask where your client's family comes from before we assign anyone.

Sindhi interpreters for clinics, courts and family visits

Face-to-face Sindhi interpreting suits hospital consultations, solicitors' appointments, court hearings and home visits from social workers. For shorter or unplanned conversations, telephone interpreting is open around the clock every day of the year, and video interpreting connects through our own app or through Teams, Zoom and similar platforms.

Plenty of Sindhi speakers from Pakistan also know Urdu, yet older relatives and those with less schooling usually explain symptoms, family disputes or property history more fully in Sindhi. Interpreters familiar with Vicholi, the Hyderabad-based standard, as well as Lari or Thari speech help clients relax. A female or male interpreter can be requested for medical or family matters.

Written Sindhi and certified Sindhi translation

Sindhi is normally written right to left in an extended Arabic-based alphabet of more than fifty letters, several carrying extra dots for sounds Urdu lacks; some Indian writers use Devanagari instead. Our translators work in whichever script your readers expect and check that typesetting keeps every character intact.

Sindh provincial records, affidavits, land documents, wills, letters and business correspondence can all be translated into or out of English. Certified Sindhi translation carries a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. Sindhi or Urdu documents needed by American immigration officers carry a translator's signed certificate of accuracy. Where a bundle mixes Sindhi with Urdu or English papers, one team translates everything.

Sindhi transcription

We transcribe Sindhi audio and video, from recorded meetings and witness interviews to oral history projects, producing time-stamped transcripts with an English translation alongside. Code-switching into Urdu or English is flagged so readers can see exactly where the speaker changed language. Recorded phone calls and voice messages used as evidence are handled the same way, with names and places spelled consistently with any translated documents in the case.

Sectors we support in Sindhi

Our vetted, trained and qualified Sindhi linguists can support the NHS and private clinics, immigration and settlement advisers, family and property lawyers, importers and exporters dealing with Karachi, and community and faith organisations. You work with one SILA Linguists® coordinator throughout, every linguist is vetted and signs a confidentiality agreement, and personal data is handled in line with UK GDPR. Sindhi interpreting is available to US immigration attorneys, courts and hospitals as well as to UK services.

Good to know

Working with Sindhi

Interpreting

  • Find out whether the client is from Pakistan or is part of the Indian or wider Sindhi diaspora. Vocabulary differs, and many diaspora Sindhis are also fluent in Hindi, Gujarati or English.
  • Many Sindhi speakers from Pakistan also speak Urdu. Even so, older or less formally educated clients often prefer Sindhi for detailed or sensitive matters.
  • Some clients may request an interpreter of the same gender in healthcare or family matters, which we accommodate where possible.
  • Sindhi interpreters can be booked by telephone, video or face to face.

Translation

  • In Pakistan, Sindhi is written right to left in an extended Arabic-based alphabet with more than 50 letters, including several letters with extra dots for sounds not found in Urdu. Fonts must include these characters. In India, the same Arabic-based script is officially recognised and widely used, and Devanagari is also used by some writers.
  • Pakistani documents are usually in Urdu or English, though Sindh provincial records may include Sindhi. We translate Sindhi documents for certified use and produce materials in the script your readers use.
