Kutchi is a north-western Indo-Aryan language closely related to Sindhi, with substantial vocabulary from Gujarati and Rajasthani. It is often listed as a separate language, sometimes under the name Kachhi. In India it is officially grouped under Sindhi, and some speakers regard it as a dialect of Sindhi. We describe it as its own language here because that is how it is usually requested.

Kutchi is spoken mainly in the Kutch district of Gujarat and by communities in Mumbai and in Sindh, Pakistan. Many Kutchi families, including Hindu, Muslim and Jain communities, settled in East Africa and later in the UK, Canada and elsewhere, often speaking Gujarati, Swahili and English as well. Kutchi Memoni and other community varieties exist.

How we help

Kutchi (Kacchi) services

SILA Linguists®

Kutchi (Kacchi) interpreters and translators from SILA Linguists®

Kutchi families have travelled far from the Kutch district of Gujarat: to Mumbai and Karachi, to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Malawi, and on to Britain, North America and the Gulf. SILA Linguists® arranges Kutchi interpreting and translation for health, care, family and community services wherever those families now live. Indian Kutchi, Pakistani Kutchi and East African diaspora speech differ in loanwords and pronunciation, and Hindu, Muslim and Jain communities, including Kutchi Memon families, have their own varieties, so we always ask about background first.

Kutchi interpreting for older relatives and family matters

Most Kutchi speakers from India also speak Gujarati, and those from Pakistan often speak Sindhi or Urdu, so younger family members may be happy with a Gujarati or Urdu interpreter. Grandparents are a different matter. For a diagnosis, a care assessment, a hospital discharge plan or a conversation about end-of-life wishes, an older person is usually most at ease in Kutchi, and a Kutchi interpreter keeps the family out of the difficult role of interpreting for each other.

Telephone and video are normally the quickest ways to reach a Kutchi interpreter. Our telephone interpreting line is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video calls run through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Face-to-face appointments can also be arranged for home visits, GP practices, care homes and family meetings, and we will try to meet a request for a female or male interpreter.

Writing Kutchi: scripts and certified documents

Kutchi has no single standard written form. In India it is generally written in Gujarati script, and in Pakistan in the Sindhi form of the Arabic-based script, running right to left. For leaflets, letters and public information aimed at Kutchi speakers, we agree with you which script fits your readers, or recommend audio and video if your audience prefers to listen.

Official records from Kutch, Mumbai and Sindh are issued in Gujarati, Sindhi, Urdu or English, and East African records in English or Swahili. We identify the language of each certificate and provide certified translation from it, with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, courts and other UK authorities. Gujarati-language papers needed in North America are certified to the receiving authority's standard, whether a US certificate of accuracy or a Canadian provincially certified translation.

Kutchi transcription

Family recordings, research interviews, oral history projects and recorded statements in Kutchi can be transcribed with time stamps and translated into English. Speakers often blend Kutchi with Gujarati, Swahili, Urdu and English in a single conversation, and our transcripts show where each change happens.

Where we can help in Kutchi

Our vetted, trained and qualified Kutchi linguists can support NHS hospitals and GP practices, elderly care and dementia services, adult social care and family support teams, immigration and family solicitors, and mosques, temples and community associations. One project team looks after your request from start to finish, every linguist is vetted and bound by a confidentiality agreement, and personal data is handled under UK GDPR. Kutchi speakers in Canada and the US can have an interpreter for immigration, family court and medical appointments, with relay through Gujarati if the client prefers.

Good to know

Working with Kutchi (Kacchi)

Interpreting

  • Most Kutchi speakers from India also read and speak Gujarati, and those from Pakistan often speak Sindhi or Urdu. Even so, older family members may be most at ease in Kutchi, particularly for health or care discussions.
  • Ask about the client's background: Indian Kutchi, Pakistani Kutchi and East African diaspora speech differ in loanwords and pronunciation. Community varieties can also differ.
  • Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest options for Kutchi, and face-to-face appointments can also be arranged.

Translation

  • Kutchi has no single standard written form. In India it is usually written in the Gujarati script, and in Pakistan in the Sindhi form of the Arabic-based script, written right to left. Official documents from the region are in Gujarati, Sindhi, Urdu or English, so certified document translation will usually be from one of those languages.
  • For leaflets or public information aimed at Kutchi speakers, we agree with you which script to use, or recommend audio and video formats where readers are more comfortable listening.
