Sanskrit is the oldest attested Indo-Aryan language. Vedic Sanskrit, the language of the Vedas, is distinguished from Classical Sanskrit, which was codified by the grammarian Pāṇini around the fourth century BCE and became the language of epic poetry, drama, philosophy, law, astronomy and medicine. It is a scriptural language of Hinduism and is also important in Buddhist and Jain traditions, and it has deeply influenced the vocabulary of most languages of India and of Southeast Asia.

Sanskrit is one of the scheduled languages of the Constitution of India, and it is taught in schools and universities, used in ritual and broadcast in short daily news bulletins. A small number of people declare it as their mother tongue. Sanskrit has no fixed script of its own: today it is usually printed in Devanagari, but manuscripts survive in many regional scripts, and scholars use the IAST or ISO 15919 Latin transliteration.

How we help

Sanskrit services

SILA Linguists®

Sanskrit translation and specialist interpreting from SILA Linguists®

Sanskrit is the classical and liturgical language behind Vedic hymns, epic poetry, philosophy and much of the vocabulary of South and Southeast Asia, and SILA Linguists® provides Sanskrit translators and specialist interpreters to universities, publishers, museums, temples and media producers at home in the UK and abroad in North America, Australia and New Zealand. Most of our Sanskrit work is written translation. Telling us the tradition, the text and the edition you are working from lets us choose a linguist with exactly the right background, whether Vedic, Classical, Buddhist or Jain.

Interpreting for ceremonies, conferences and broadcasts

Live Sanskrit interpreting is typically needed for weddings and religious ceremonies, academic conferences, cultural festivals and broadcasts, where chanted or recited passages need explaining to an English-speaking audience. Our linguists can work consecutively alongside a priest or speaker, or provide simultaneous commentary, including remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) for streamed events.

For smaller occasions, such as a briefing for a film crew before filming a puja or a recorded lecture series, video interpreting in our dedicated SILA Linguists® app or on your usual video platform keeps things simple. Tell us whether the passages come from the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads or Buddhist sutras, so we can prepare a linguist who knows them.

Sanskrit translation with scholarly care

Typical projects include philosophical and religious texts, passages cited in books and journal articles, museum labels, manuscript descriptions and short texts for artwork, tattoos or engraving, where a single error is permanent. Sanskrit has no single script of its own: we deliver in Devanagari, in IAST or ISO 15919 transliteration with full diacritics, or both, and we can work from manuscripts in other Brahmic scripts such as Bengali, Grantha, Sharada or Telugu.

Because sandhi joins words together, one passage can sometimes be divided and read in more than one way. Our translators note significant interpretive choices so that editors and researchers can follow the reasoning. Certified Sanskrit translation of certificates and academic records comes with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by universities, employers and UK authorities.

Transcription, subtitling and media

We transcribe recorded recitations, lectures and ceremonies, producing Devanagari or transliterated text with time references and a full English translation. For documentaries, films and online courses, we supply subtitles that render chanted verses accurately and readably, and our transcribers can flag each cited Sanskrit passage within lectures given in Hindi, Nepali or English.

Sectors we support in Sanskrit

Our vetted, trained and qualified Sanskrit specialists can support university departments, academic publishers, museums, libraries and archives, temples and cultural organisations, wedding planners, broadcasters and film producers. You deal with one case coordinator throughout, our linguists are vetted and work under confidentiality agreements, and unpublished research or manuscripts are handled in line with UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Sanskrit

Interpreting

  • Live Sanskrit interpreting suits religious ceremonies, weddings, academic conferences and cultural or broadcasting events, where chanted or recited passages need to be explained to an audience in English. Tell us the tradition and the texts involved, for example Vedic hymns, the Bhagavad Gita or Buddhist sutras, so that we can match a linguist with the right specialist background.

Translation

  • Most Sanskrit work is translation. Typical projects include philosophical and religious texts, passages cited in publications, academic research, and short texts for artwork or engraving where accuracy is essential. Please tell us which edition you are working from and whether the readers expect Devanagari, transliteration or both.
  • We can deliver translations with the original in Devanagari, a Latin transliteration with diacritics, or both. Sandhi, the joining of words in Sanskrit, means one passage can sometimes be divided and read in more than one way, so translators note significant interpretive choices. Certified translations of Sanskrit certificates and academic records are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies.
