Marathi is a Southern Indo-Aryan language and one of India's scheduled languages, spoken as a first language by a very large population, mainly in Maharashtra. It is the official language of Maharashtra and a co-official language in Goa, and has been designated a classical language by the Government of India.

Standard Marathi is based on the speech of the Pune region. Regional varieties include Varhadi in Vidarbha, the Konkan coast varieties and the speech of Marathwada, and there are close links with Konkani, which is a separate language. Marathi has a strong literary and theatre tradition and a large press and film industry.

Marathi is the language of local government, courts at district level, schools and the press in Maharashtra. Mumbai is highly multilingual, and many residents switch between Marathi, Hindi, English and other languages day to day.

How we help

Marathi services

SILA Linguists®

Marathi interpreting, translation and certified documents by SILA Linguists®

Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra, co-official in Goa and the language of district courts, local government, schools and a lively press and theatre scene. SILA Linguists® supplies Marathi interpreters and translators to solicitors, courts, immigration advisers, hospitals and businesses with links to Mumbai and Pune, across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Standard Marathi follows Pune speech, while Varhadi in Vidarbha, the Konkan coast and Marathwada each have their own flavour, so we note the client's region when we book.

Marathi interpreters for legal, medical and business settings

Marathi legal language is formal and heavily Sanskrit-based. In court hearings, solicitors' conferences and property or inheritance disputes, our interpreters keep the exact legal meaning while making sure the client actually understands what is being said. They use respectful forms such as tumhi and aapan with adults, which matters in family and inheritance discussions involving older relatives.

Many Marathi speakers from urban Maharashtra also speak Hindi and English, yet for an older person or a sensitive medical conversation a Marathi interpreter is still the better choice. We offer face-to-face Marathi interpreting, telephone interpreting 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Business meetings and conferences with partners in Mumbai and Pune can be covered by consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreters.

Marathi property records and certified translation

Our Marathi translators are experienced in property and inheritance matters. Maharashtra land records such as 7/12 extracts, sale deeds, wills, succession certificates and court orders are often written in Marathi, and many administrative terms have no direct English equivalent; our translators add clear notes where needed. We also translate birth and marriage certificates, school and university records and business contracts.

Marathi uses Devanagari in its Balbodh style, with conventions such as the eyelash ra (र्‍) that fonts and keyboards must support. Certified Marathi translation carries a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by banks and employers. US filings receive a signed certificate of accuracy, and Australian authorities can receive NAATI-certified Marathi translation where required.

Marathi transcription

Recorded hearings, interviews, phone calls and video can be transcribed in Marathi with time stamps and translated into English. Mumbai speakers in particular move between Marathi, Hindi and English, and our transcripts mark each switch so the evidence remains clear.

Settings for our linguists in Marathi

Our vetted, trained and qualified Marathi linguists can support law firms handling property, probate and family cases, courts and tribunals, immigration advisers, NHS and private healthcare, universities, banks and companies trading with Maharashtra. You have one point of contact in our project team, vetted linguists bound by confidentiality agreements, and data protection under UK GDPR. Marathi interpreting is also available in the United States and Australia for immigration interviews, court hearings and hospital care.

Good to know

Working with Marathi

Interpreting

  • Many Marathi speakers in urban Maharashtra also speak Hindi and English. For older people or in sensitive medical and legal matters, a Marathi interpreter is still the better choice.
  • Interpreters use respectful forms such as tumhi and aapan with adults; a brief note on the client's region can help us match accent.
  • Marathi interpreters are available face to face, by video and by telephone.
  • In court and legal settings, Marathi legal terminology can be formal and heavily Sanskrit-based. Interpreters make sure the client understands what is being said while preserving the exact legal meaning.

Translation

  • Marathi is written left to right in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, with a few Marathi-specific characters and conventions, such as the eyelash ra (र्‍). Fonts and keyboards must support these.
  • Maharashtra government documents, property records (7/12 extracts) and court papers are often in Marathi. We translate them for certified use, with notes on administrative terms that have no direct English equivalent.
