Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language written in Devanagari. In Nepal it is the most widely spoken mother tongue and a second language for many more. It serves as the common language among speakers of Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tamang, Newar, Magar, Gurung, Rai, Limbu and many others. In India, Nepali is a scheduled language and an official language of Sikkim.

Nepali spoken in Nepal, Darjeeling and Sikkim, and by the Lhotshampa community of Bhutan, differs slightly in vocabulary and accent. Many Nepali-speaking families in the UK have links to the Brigade of Gurkhas.

Nepali has borrowed words from Sanskrit, Hindi, Farsi and English, and has influenced and been influenced by the Tibeto-Burman languages of the hills. Formal Nepali, used in law and government, contains many Sanskrit-derived terms.

Nepali services

SILA Linguists®

Nepali interpreters and translators for Gurkha families and beyond with SILA Linguists®

Many Nepali-speaking families in Britain have links to the Brigade of Gurkhas, and Nepali communities are also well established in the Gulf, Malaysia, the United States and Australia. SILA Linguists® provides Nepali interpreting, translation and transcription for veterans' organisations, healthcare, immigration, legal, education and employment services. Nepali is the common language of Nepal, but many clients grew up speaking Gurung, Magar, Tamang or Limbu, and speech in Darjeeling, Sikkim and among Bhutan's Lhotshampa community differs slightly, so we confirm the client's preferred language first.

Nepali interpreting with the right form of respect

Nepali grades its forms of address, from timi to tapai to hajur. Our interpreters use respectful forms with older clients and veterans, and refer to people as dai, didi, ama or buwa where that feels natural. For Gurkha veterans and their widows attending hospital, memory clinics, pension and settlement appointments, that courtesy matters as much as accuracy.

We provide face-to-face Nepali interpreters for GP and hospital appointments, elderly care reviews, immigration and settlement interviews, legal advice sessions, school meetings and workplace welfare discussions. Telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Women in particular may prefer a female interpreter for healthcare, and we accommodate that. For community events and training, we offer consecutive and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Nepali translation and the Bikram Sambat calendar

Nepali documents use the Bikram Sambat calendar, so our certified translations of birth, marriage, citizenship, education and service documents convert or annotate dates for checking against Gregorian dates. Each certified Nepali translation comes with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers. For Australia we arrange NAATI-certified translation, and for American immigration a signed certificate of accuracy.

Nepali spelling differs in places from Hindi, so all our Nepali work is done by Nepali translators using Unicode Devanagari. Older files often use legacy fonts such as Preeti, which we convert before translating. Into Nepali, we produce health information, workplace guidance, school letters and community material, and we can translate formal Nepali legal text, which is full of Sanskrit-derived terms, into clear English.

Nepali transcription

We transcribe Nepali interviews, recorded calls, research and oral history recordings with time stamps and English translation, noting where speakers switch into Hindi, English or a hill language.

Sectors we support in Nepali

Our vetted, trained and qualified Nepali linguists can support veterans' charities and welfare services, NHS and elderly care providers, immigration and settlement advisers, solicitors, schools and colleges, employers and recruitment agencies, and community associations. With SILA Linguists® you have one project team, vetted linguists bound by confidentiality agreements, and data handled under UK GDPR. Nepali interpreters can support Nepali-speaking families in the United States and Australia at immigration interviews, hospitals, courts and schools.

Good to know

Working with Nepali

Interpreting

  • Many clients from Nepal speak another first language, such as Gurung, Magar, Tamang or Limbu, but most are comfortable in Nepali. For complex matters, it is worth asking about the client's preferred language.
  • Nepali has graded forms of address (timi, tapai and hajur). Interpreters use respectful forms with older clients and veterans, and may refer to people as dai, didi, ama or buwa where appropriate.
  • Some clients, particularly women in healthcare settings, may prefer an interpreter of the same gender.
  • Nepali interpreters are available face to face, by video and by telephone.

Translation

  • Nepali is written left to right in Devanagari. Nepali spelling conventions differ in places from Hindi, so translations should be produced by a Nepali translator, using Unicode fonts that support conjuncts properly. Older documents may use legacy fonts such as Preeti, which need converting.
  • Nepal uses its own Bikram Sambat calendar on official documents. Certified translations of birth, marriage, citizenship and education documents convert or annotate dates so they can be checked against Gregorian dates.
