Hindko interpreting and translation

Hindko is an Indo-Aryan language of north-western Pakistan, spoken around Abbottabad, Mansehra, Peshawar and Kohat. We provide Hindko interpreters and help you decide when Hindko, Urdu or Punjabi is the right choice.

Hindko belongs to the Lahnda group of north-western Indo-Aryan languages, which also includes Saraiki and the Pahari-Pothwari varieties, and it is closely related to Punjabi. Whether Hindko is one language or a cluster of related dialects is debated. Northern Hindko, centred on the Hazara Division, and Southern Hindko, spoken around Peshawar, Kohat and Attock, are often listed separately, although the dialects do not divide neatly along that line.

Hindko is used at home, in the bazaar and in a growing body of poetry, broadcasting and local literature, with literary standards based on the Abbottabad and Peshawari dialects. Urdu is the language of schooling and administration in the region, and many Hindko speakers in and around Peshawar also speak Pashto.

How we help

Hindko services

SILA Linguists®

Hindko interpreting, transcription and language analysis with SILA Linguists®

Hindko is the home language of the Hazara Division, Peshawar, Kohat and Attock, and of the Muzaffarabad area, with communities in Britain and the Gulf. SILA Linguists® arranges Hindko interpreters, transcribers and language specialists for healthcare, family services, immigration and asylum work wherever clients need them. Northern Hindko from Abbottabad and Mansehra differs in pronunciation and vocabulary from the Southern Hindko of Peshawar and Kohat, so we ask which area the client comes from and match accordingly.

Hindko interpreters for sensitive conversations

Many Hindko speakers manage well in Urdu, and for some routine matters an Urdu interpreter may be enough. For people with limited schooling, older relatives and anyone unwell or distressed, a Hindko interpreter often makes the difference between a client who nods along and one who explains properly. That matters in maternity care, safeguarding meetings, family support visits and asylum interviews.

We provide Hindko interpreting by telephone, around the clock and throughout the year, and by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform; face-to-face interpreters can be arranged where a suitable linguist is available. A female or male interpreter can be requested for healthcare and family matters. If relay through Urdu is ever the practical solution, we discuss it with you in advance and never substitute a language without telling you. Speakers around Peshawar often also know Pashto, which we take into account.

Hindko translation and Pakistani documents

Hindko is written right to left in an Arabic-based script, usually Nastaliq, with additional letters for sounds absent from Urdu; spelling is not fully standardised. Because official documents from Pakistan are issued in Urdu or English, certified translation of identity cards, certificates and court papers is normally from Urdu, and we can handle that within the same project, with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities.

Hindko translation itself is most valuable for community information, health messages and personal letters, often supported by recorded audio for people who prefer listening to reading.

Hindko transcription and LADO

Recorded speech is central to Hindko work. We transcribe interviews, phone recordings and evidential audio with time stamps and English translation, marking switches into Urdu, Pashto or Punjabi. For immigration and asylum cases involving clients from north-west Pakistan, we also provide language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO), carried out by specialist linguists familiar with regional Hindko varieties.

Where we can help in Hindko

Our vetted, trained and qualified Hindko linguists can support immigration solicitors and asylum caseworkers, NHS maternity and primary care, health visitors, children's and family services, police and courts, and charities working with Pakistani and Kashmiri communities. One project team handles each case from booking to delivery, our linguists are vetted and sign confidentiality agreements, and personal data is protected under UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Hindko

Interpreting

  • Many Hindko speakers are comfortable in Urdu. For people with limited schooling, older relatives and anyone who is unwell or distressed, a Hindko interpreter can make a real difference.
  • Tell us whether the client is from Hazara (Abbottabad, Mansehra) or from Peshawar or Kohat. Northern and Southern Hindko differ in pronunciation and vocabulary, and a matched interpreter will be easier to follow.
  • Some clients may prefer an interpreter of the same gender, especially in healthcare and family matters. We take this into account when it is requested.
  • Video and telephone interpreting are practical options for Hindko; relay through Urdu can also be discussed with you in advance, but we never substitute languages without telling you.

Translation

  • Hindko is written right to left in an Arabic-based script, usually in the Nastaliq style used for Urdu, with extra letters for sounds not found in Urdu. Spelling is not fully standardised.
  • Official documents from Pakistan are issued in Urdu or English, so certified translation of personal documents will normally be from Urdu. Hindko translation is mainly useful for community information, audio messages and transcription of recorded speech.
