Pashai interpreting and translation

Pashai is a cluster of closely related languages spoken in the valleys of eastern Afghanistan, from Laghman and Nangarhar to Kapisa and Kunar. SILA Linguists provides Pashai interpreters and helps clients identify which Pashai variety a speaker uses.

Pashai is usually classified with the Dardic languages of the Indo-Aryan branch, although whether Dardic is a genetic subgroup or a geographical label is debated. Pashai is usually divided into four related languages: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest.

Variation from valley to valley is considerable. People from neighbouring districts understand each other, but speakers from opposite ends of the Pashai area may find one another hard to follow. Most Pashai speakers also know Pashto or Dari, learnt through school, trade or work, though people who have spent less time outside their home area may be less fluent in them.

Pashai is mainly a spoken language. Little is published in it, and most literate speakers read and write in Dari or Pashto.

How we help

Pashai services

SILA Linguists®

Pashai interpreters and LADO services from SILA Linguists®

Pashai is spoken in the valleys of Laghman, Nangarhar, Kapisa and Kunar in eastern Afghanistan, and it varies so much from valley to valley that it is often treated as several separate languages. SILA Linguists® arranges Pashai interpreters, transcription and language analysis for asylum teams, legal representatives, health services and resettlement providers in the UK, across North America and in Australia and New Zealand. The single most useful fact at booking is the client's home province and district, such as Alingar, Dawlat Shah, Darra-i-Nur or Tagab.

Pashai interpreting matched to the valley

Neighbouring districts understand each other, but speakers from opposite ends of the Pashai area can struggle. We therefore match an interpreter whose own variety is close to the client's. Asylum and immigration interviews, health assessments, police interviews, legal consultations and resettlement support are the typical settings, covered face to face, by telephone day or night, bank holidays included, and by video through the SILA Linguists® app.

Video suits Pashai particularly well: the interpreter can confirm the variety and settle unfamiliar words at the start. Many clients choose Pashto or Dari for routine matters, but for asylum interviews and evidence, where precise personal detail counts, the client's own Pashai variety is the clearer choice. The interpreter's gender can be matched on request.

Written material for Pashai speakers

Pashai is mainly spoken and has no widely used spelling, so material for Pashai speakers is usually translated into Dari or Pashto or recorded as Pashai audio. Where written Pashai is required, we use an Arabic-based orthography and agree the conventions with you before work starts.

Afghan tazkira identity documents, certificates and court papers are in Dari or Pashto. We provide certified translation into English with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts, local authorities and universities, and keep names spelled consistently across the bundle.

Pashai transcription and language analysis

Recorded Pashai interviews are transcribed, time-coded and translated into English, with any passages in Pashto or Dari marked. Pashai is a language in which origin questions arise in asylum claims from eastern Afghanistan, and SILA Linguists® offers language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO), carried out by specialist linguists and analysts.

Settings for our linguists in Pashai

Our vetted, trained and qualified Pashai linguists can support asylum and immigration services, legal aid solicitors, police and legal teams, health providers, and resettlement programmes supporting Afghan families. You have one point of contact throughout, vetted linguists, and confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR protecting every interview. They can also support organisations working with Afghan women and children, and mental health services working with trauma, when Dari or Pashto would leave too much unsaid.

Good to know

Working with Pashai

Interpreting

  • The most useful detail at booking is the speaker's home province and district, for example Alingar or Dawlat Shah in Laghman, Darra-i-Nur in Nangarhar or Tagab in Kapisa. With that information we assign an interpreter whose own variety is close to the client's.
  • Many clients choose Pashto or Dari for routine matters. For asylum interviews, health assessments or evidence in court, where precise personal detail counts, interpreting in the client's own Pashai variety is the clearer option.
  • Video interpreting suits Pashai well: the interpreter can confirm the variety and check unfamiliar words early in the session. Telephone and face-to-face interpreting are also available, and the interpreter's gender can be matched on request.

Translation

  • As Pashai has no widely used standard spelling, documents for Pashai speakers are usually translated into Dari or Pashto, or recorded as Pashai audio. Where written Pashai is needed, an Arabic-based orthography is used and we agree the conventions with you first.
  • Afghan identity documents (tazkira), certificates and court papers are in Dari or Pashto. SILA provides certified translations of these into English, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies, and transcribes recorded Pashai interviews.
