Hassaniya Arabic interpreting and translation

Hassaniya is the Arabic of Mauritania and the western Sahara, spoken across a large desert region of north-west Africa. It is distinct from Moroccan and Algerian Arabic, so we use interpreters who speak it.

Hassaniya Arabic is the main language of Mauritania and is also spoken in Western Sahara, southern Morocco, south-western Algeria (including the Tindouf area), northern Mali and parts of Senegal and Niger. It descends from the Arabic of the Bedouin Banu Hassan tribes who moved into the region in the late medieval period.

Hassaniya is often grouped with the Maghrebi varieties but has its own strong identity. It has kept some features of older Bedouin Arabic and has borrowed vocabulary from Berber (particularly Zenaga) and from West African languages such as Wolof. Speakers across the region understand each other, though there are local differences in vocabulary and accent.

How we help

Hassaniya Arabic services

SILA Linguists®

Hassaniya Arabic interpreters, transcription and LADO with SILA Linguists®

Hassaniya Arabic is the main language of Mauritania and is spoken in Western Sahara, southern Morocco, the Tindouf area of Algeria, northern Mali and parts of Senegal and Niger. It descends from the speech of the Bedouin Banu Hassan and has borrowed from Zenaga Berber and Wolof. SILA Linguists® provides Hassaniya interpreters, transcribers and translators to asylum services, legal advisers, healthcare providers and humanitarian organisations in Britain, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond, and we ask where the speaker grew up because local vocabulary and accent vary.

Hassaniya interpreting by genuine Hassaniya speakers

Moroccan or Algerian Arabic interpreters may understand some Hassaniya but often miss vocabulary and expressions, which is risky in an asylum interview or a legal consultation. We book a Hassaniya speaker. Many Mauritanians also speak French, Pulaar, Soninke or Wolof, and we ask the client which language suits them before confirming.

Face-to-face Hassaniya interpreting is available for Home Office interviews, tribunal hearings, solicitors' meetings, hospital appointments and humanitarian casework. If you need Hassaniya at short notice, our phone line is staffed through the night and at weekends, and video appointments can be held on the SILA Linguists® app or your own system. Female and male interpreters can be booked to suit the client.

Translating Mauritanian and Saharan documents

Hassaniya is mainly spoken. Official documents from Mauritania are in Modern Standard Arabic and often French, and we provide certified translation of birth certificates, identity documents, family records, school certificates and court papers from either language, each certified with our signed confirmation of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities across the country.

Written Hassaniya, in Arabic script or informal Latin spelling, appears mainly in poetry, songs, social media and messages. When those texts become evidence, our translators render them faithfully and explain any culturally specific terms in a translator's note. Poetry and proverbs, which carry great weight in Hassaniya culture, are handled by translators who understand their references and imagery.

Hassaniya transcription and language analysis

Recorded speech, interviews and messages are written out with timings, put into English, and any French or Wolof marked as such. SILA Linguists® also prepares LADO and nationality assessment reports for Hassaniya speakers, which can help where a claim depends on Mauritanian, Sahrawi or Malian origin.
