Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Macedonian Sign Language is the sign language of the Deaf community in North Macedonia and is regulated by a national law.
Македонски знаковен јазик
Macedonian Sign Language developed from the sign language used across the former Yugoslavia and remains close to the sign languages of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia, with its own local vocabulary. It is often grouped with the sign languages of the former Yugoslavia.
North Macedonia's Law on the Use of Sign Language regulates its use in communication with institutions, education and interpreting. A national association of Deaf and hard of hearing people represents the community. Deaf Albanian-speaking families in North Macedonia generally use Macedonian Sign Language through shared schooling, though local practice varies.

SILA Linguists® provides Macedonian Sign Language interpreting, signed video and captions for immigration services, healthcare providers, legal advisers and employers working with Deaf people from North Macedonia.
Almost all Macedonian Sign Language interpreters are based in North Macedonia, so video remote interpreting is the usual route for appointments abroad. We help clients set up a reliable connection and a clear camera view, and we confirm the interpreter and the time difference before the session.
Interpreters from Serbia may sometimes be understood, but we check with the Deaf person first, particularly for legal matters, where every sign must be clear. Typical assignments include immigration appointments, hospital and GP visits, legal consultations and workplace meetings. For Albanian-speaking Deaf people from North Macedonia, we ask which sign language and which written language they are most comfortable with, as local practice varies. Long or sensitive appointments can include a Deaf relay.
Many Deaf people from North Macedonia also follow Serbian or Croatian signing through television and social media, which can make some vocabulary familiar, but legal rights, consent and medical risks should always be explained in the person's own sign language. When that is not possible at short notice, we tell you honestly and suggest a safe alternative, such as a Deaf relay.
We translate written Macedonian, Albanian or English, such as immigration guidance, health information and employment documents, into recorded Macedonian Sign Language video with Deaf translators, and translate signed video into written English. Macedonian and Albanian certificates and records are translated and certified by our language teams.
Because the region's sign languages are close, a single carefully produced video can sometimes serve Deaf viewers from more than one country, and we advise honestly on when separate versions are needed.
We caption videos and recorded meetings and provide written transcripts of signed and spoken content, each checked by a person.
Where a session used a Deaf relay, the transcript can note which points needed clarification.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Macedonian Sign Language interpreters can support immigration services, healthcare providers, legal practitioners and employers.
