Macedonian is the official language of North Macedonia, where Albanian also has official status. Macedonian-speaking minorities live in Albania and Serbia, and there are large communities in Australia, Canada, the United States, Germany and Switzerland. The standard language was codified in the twentieth century and is based on west-central dialects.

Macedonian is closely related to Bulgarian and also shares features with Serbian. Questions about language naming and classification in the region can be sensitive, so we treat Macedonian as a language in its own right and book Macedonian interpreters accordingly. Like Bulgarian, it has almost no noun cases and places the definite article at the end of the word. Unusually, it has three sets of definite articles indicating whether something is near, far or neutral.

The Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet has 31 letters, including ѓ, ќ, ѕ, љ, њ, џ and ј.

SILA Linguists®

Macedonian interpreting and translation services with SILA Linguists®

Macedonian, македонски јазик, is the official language of North Macedonia, where Albanian also has official status, with minorities in Albania and Serbia and large communities in Australia, Canada, the United States, Germany and Switzerland. The standard is based on west-central dialects and is close to Bulgarian. SILA Linguists® provides Macedonian interpreters, translators and transcribers for immigration and nationality applications, courts, police and solicitors, healthcare and social care, employers in construction, schools and businesses across the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Macedonian or Albanian? Interpreting the client's language

Many people from North Macedonia speak Albanian as a first language, so we check which language the client prefers and can supply either. Macedonian has formal вие and familiar ти, and our interpreters follow the speaker's register, whether in a police interview, a hospital consultation or a meeting with a social worker.

Video and telephone interpreting work well for Macedonian, with telephone interpreters ready at any hour and video through the SILA Linguists® app or the video service your team already uses. Face-to-face interpreters can be arranged for court hearings, tribunal appointments and medical consultations, and for site inductions and safety briefings in construction. Business delegations and trade meetings can have consecutive or simultaneous interpreting, and Australian and Canadian community organisations can book remote interpreting for events with older community members.

Macedonian translation and certified documents

Names should match the Latin transliteration in the client's passport, because older documents may use different spellings or Serbian-style forms. Fonts must display the Macedonian letters ѓ and ќ correctly, since some fonts substitute Serbian glyphs or show the wrong letter shapes; we check the final layout. Certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, police certificates, diplomas and court documents carry a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals and colleges, and by employers. Macedonian records for the United States, Canada or Australia are certified to their rules, NAATI-certified translation included for Australia.

For documents going to North Macedonia, check whether a translation by a court translator registered there is required. For businesses, we translate contracts, technical documentation and marketing, and localise websites.

Macedonian transcription and subtitling

Police interviews, phone recordings and media in Macedonian are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, and we subtitle training and community videos. Where speakers move between Macedonian, Albanian or Serbian in the same recording, each passage is labelled so the English record shows who said what, and in which language.

Where we can help in Macedonian

Macedonian interpreting is also offered to courts, hospitals and community organisations in Australia, Canada and the United States.
