Luri (Lori) is a group of Iranian varieties spoken in the Zagros mountains of western and south-western Iran: in Lorestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and parts of Ilam, Khuzestan, Fars and Hamadan provinces, with smaller communities in eastern Iraq. Three languages are usually recognised in this group: Northern Luri, centred on Lorestan; Southern Luri, including the speech of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad and Mamasani; and Bakhtiari.

Luri is usually classified with Farsi in the south-western branch of Iranian languages. Some speakers and clients, particularly in border areas and among Feyli communities, associate Luri with Kurdish and may call it Kurdish Luri, and Laki sits on the boundary between Luri and Southern Kurdish. We describe these labels neutrally and match the variety the person speaks.

Almost all Luri speakers also speak Farsi, which they learn at school and use in administration.

How we help

Luri services

SILA Linguists®

Luri (Lori) interpreting, transcription and translation with SILA Linguists®

Luri is spoken in the Zagros mountains of western and south-western Iran, in Lorestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and parts of Ilam, Khuzestan, Fars and Hamadan, with smaller communities just across the border in eastern Iraq. SILA Linguists® arranges Luri interpreters and transcribers, and certified Farsi translators, for asylum lawyers, tribunals, healthcare teams and social services across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. We start every booking by asking how the client names their own speech.

Matching the right Luri variety

Luri is usually divided into Northern Luri, centred on Lorestan, Southern Luri, including the speech of Kohgiluyeh and Mamasani, and Bakhtiari. Some clients, particularly Feyli speakers and people from border areas, describe their language as Kurdish Luri, and Laki sits on the line between Luri and Southern Kurdish. We use these labels neutrally and simply match the variety the person speaks, so please tell us the town or province and the name the client uses: Luri, Bakhtiari, Laki or Feyli.

Younger and city-raised speakers are often comfortable with a Farsi interpreter. Older or rural clients, and anyone giving a detailed personal history at an asylum interview or appeal, may express themselves much more fully in Luri. We ask the client and note their choice. Face-to-face interpreting is available for Home Office interviews, tribunal hearings, solicitors' meetings, GP and hospital appointments, while video interpreting widens the pool of interpreters from the right region considerably. Telephone interpreting covers urgent calls at any hour, and a female or male interpreter can be arranged.

Translation: Farsi documents, Luri voices

Iranian identity cards, birth certificates and court papers are in Farsi, so UK authorities usually need a certified Farsi to English translation, which we provide with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, courts and universities. Luri itself is mostly spoken; when written, it uses the Farsi alphabet, right to left, with no fixed spelling, so any Luri text we produce follows agreed conventions and is reviewed by a native speaker.

Transcription and LADO for Luri speakers

Recorded asylum interviews, phone calls and personal testimony in Luri are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with switches into Farsi or Arabic clearly labelled. Where a claimant's origin in Iran or Iraq is in question, SILA Linguists® can arrange a LADO report from specialist analysts familiar with the Zagros varieties.

Where we can help in Luri

Our vetted, trained and qualified Luri linguists can support immigration solicitors and barristers, asylum caseworkers, NHS services, mental health teams, social services and refugee charities. One coordinator manages your request, and every linguist is vetted and keeps all material confidential under NDAs and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Luri

Interpreting

  • Tell us the speaker's town or province and whether they describe their speech as Luri, Bakhtiari, Laki or Feyli, so we can match the right linguist.
  • Many younger and urban speakers are comfortable with a Farsi interpreter. Older or rural speakers, and anyone giving a detailed personal account in an asylum or legal setting, may express themselves more fully in Luri. Ask the client and record their choice.
  • Video interpreting works well and widens the pool of interpreters from the right region.

Translation

  • Luri is mainly spoken rather than written. When it is written, it uses the Farsi alphabet, right to left, with no fixed standard spelling, so translations need agreed conventions and a native reviewer.
  • Iranian civil records, identity cards and court papers are in Farsi, so certified Farsi translation is normally what UK authorities require. Luri translation and transcription are used for recorded interviews and community information.
