Bakhtiari (Bakhtiyari) is a Southwestern Iranian language spoken mainly in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province and in the north and east of Khuzestan, around towns such as Shahrekord, Farsan, Masjed Soleyman and Izeh, with speakers also in neighbouring parts of Isfahan and Lorestan. Many Bakhtiari families long followed a seasonal migration between summer pastures in the high mountains and winter grazing on the Khuzestan plain, although most now live in towns and villages.

Bakhtiari is placed within the Luri dialect continuum, between Northern and Southern Luri, and it is often described as a form of Luri. It is usually treated as a separate language. Speakers commonly identify with one of the two traditional tribal divisions, Haft Lang and Chahar Lang, and speech varies from valley to valley. Nearly everyone schooled in Iran also speaks Farsi.

How we help

Bakhtiari services

SILA Linguists®

Bakhtiari interpreters, transcription and translation with SILA Linguists®

Bakhtiari is spoken mainly in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province and in northern and eastern Khuzestan, around Shahrekord, Farsan, Masjed Soleyman and Izeh, with speakers in neighbouring parts of Isfahan and Lorestan. It belongs to the Luri continuum. SILA Linguists® provides Bakhtiari interpreters, transcribers and translators to asylum representatives, clinics, solicitors and social care teams in Britain, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. We ask whether the client calls their language Bakhtiari, Luri or simply Farsi, and which district they come from.

Bakhtiari interpreting for asylum and health appointments

A Bakhtiari interpreter follows place names, kinship terms and pastoral vocabulary that a Farsi-only interpreter can miss, which matters when an asylum applicant describes their home area, family or journey at an interview or a tribunal hearing. Many Bakhtiari families long followed a seasonal migration between mountain summer pastures and winter grazing on the Khuzestan plain; speakers identify with the Haft Lang or Chahar Lang divisions, and speech varies from valley to valley. Younger speakers are often at ease in Farsi, while older people and those from rural or nomadic backgrounds usually give a fuller account in Bakhtiari; we record the client's choice and book accordingly.

Our interpreters work face to face at GP and hospital appointments, police interviews, legal advice sessions, social care and housing meetings, by telephone at any time, and through video calls on the SILA Linguists® app. Bakhtiari women often prefer a female interpreter for health matters, and we can arrange one.

Translation and Iranian documents

Bakhtiari is mostly spoken. When written, it uses the Farsi alphabet right to left with no fixed spelling, so we agree conventions for names and dialect words before work starts. Identity papers, certificates and court records from Iran are in Farsi, and our Farsi translators certify them with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, educational institutions and international bodies alike. For spoken community information, such as health or housing messages, we can script and record audio in Bakhtiari, which often reaches older listeners better than print.

Transcribing recorded interviews

Much Bakhtiari work involves recorded interviews and spoken community information. We transcribe recordings with timings, note Farsi passages and local terms, and supply an English version that legal teams can rely on. Where a claim hinges on whether someone really grew up around Izeh or Shahrekord, SILA Linguists® can commission a LADO report.

Sectors we support in Bakhtiari

Our vetted, trained and qualified Bakhtiari linguists can support asylum and tribunal representatives, GP surgeries and hospitals, solicitors and police, and social care and housing teams. A named coordinator manages your Bakhtiari bookings, every interpreter is vetted and signs a non-disclosure agreement, and personal information is kept under UK GDPR.

Working with Bakhtiari

Interpreting

  • Ask whether the client calls their language Bakhtiari, Luri or simply Farsi, and note the district they come from. A Bakhtiari interpreter will follow place names, kinship terms and pastoral vocabulary that a Farsi-only interpreter can miss, which matters when an asylum applicant describes their home area, family or journey.
  • Many younger speakers are at ease in Farsi, while older people and those from rural or nomadic backgrounds often give a fuller account in Bakhtiari. Record the client's choice. Video interpreting works well, telephone interpreting suits short health or housing calls, and an interpreter of a preferred gender can be arranged on request.

Translation

  • Bakhtiari is mostly spoken. When it is written, it uses the Farsi alphabet from right to left with no fixed spelling, so we agree conventions for names and dialect words before work starts. Identity papers, certificates and court records from Iran are in Farsi, and we translate them with certified translation accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies. Bakhtiari work itself usually means transcribing and translating recorded interviews or preparing spoken community information.
