Kachin interpreting and translation

In everyday English, "Kachin" can mean a group of peoples from northern Myanmar or a single language, Jinghpaw. Our Kachin service covers Jinghpaw, the language that most people mean, and we help you check whether a client might prefer another of the region's languages.

Jinghpaw, also spelt Jingpho, is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken in Kachin State and northern Shan State in Myanmar, in Yunnan province of China (where speakers are known as Jingpo) and, as Singpho, in north-east India. It is usually placed in the Jingpho-Luish group.

The wider Kachin population includes groups who speak quite different languages, such as Lisu, Rawang, Lhaovo, Zaiwa and Lachik. Jinghpaw works as a common language among many of them, so a Rawang or Lisu speaker may also know it well. Others are more at ease in Burmese. Fighting and displacement in northern Myanmar have led many families to camps inside the country and to resettlement abroad.

How we help

Kachin services

SILA Linguists®

Kachin (Jinghpaw) interpreting and translation by SILA Linguists®

Jinghpaw, the main language of the Kachin people, is spoken in Kachin State and northern Shan State in Myanmar, in Yunnan as Jingpo and in north-east India as Singpho. SILA Linguists® arranges Kachin interpreters and translators for asylum, health, education and legal work in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. The wider Kachin population also includes Lisu, Rawang, Lhaovo and Zaiwa speakers, so we always ask which language a person uses at home before assigning a linguist.

Jinghpaw interpreters for protection, health and study

Many Kachin families have been displaced by conflict in northern Myanmar, and our interpreters are prepared for asylum and protection interviews, mental health appointments, GP visits, court hearings and college enrolment. Remote interpreting by telephone runs at any hour, weekends and holidays included, video interpreting connects through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, and face-to-face interpreters attend longer or sensitive sessions.

Jinghpaw uses polite forms and kinship terms with care, and respect for older people shows in every exchange. Interpreters who keep the right tone help clients describe distressing events clearly. If the client speaks Lisu, Rawang or another Kachin language, or is more confident in Burmese, tell us early and we will discuss the best arrangement. Female or male interpreters are available on request.

Kachin translation and certified Burmese documents

Jinghpaw is written in a Latin alphabet devised by missionaries, with combinations such as hp, ht and hk for aspirated consonants; getting these right matters for names and place names. Chinese Jingpo publishing uses a closely related spelling. We translate letters, consent forms, school reports and community guidance into Jinghpaw.

Myanmar identity papers, household lists and educational records are issued in Burmese, so certified translation is produced from Burmese, with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities. For Australia we arrange NAATI-certified translation of Burmese papers; for the United States, a signed certificate of accuracy.

Transcription and language analysis for Kachin cases

Recorded testimony, interviews and church or community recordings are transcribed, time-coded and translated into English. For asylum claims, language analysis (LADO) can be carried out by specialist analysts to support findings about a speaker's origin. Our transcribers mark any passages in Burmese, Lisu or English and spell personal and place names using the standard Jinghpaw conventions.

Where we can help in Kachin

Our vetted, trained and qualified Kachin linguists can support immigration and asylum services, humanitarian organisations, mental health teams, schools and colleges, solicitors and courts, and church and community organisations. You have one project coordinator, vetted linguists and full confidentiality under NDAs and UK GDPR. We can also prepare audio and print materials for health promotion projects reaching Kachin congregations. Kachin interpreters can assist American and Australian resettlement services, hospitals, schools and courts, by telephone or video.

Good to know

Working with Kachin

Interpreting

  • If your client describes themselves as Kachin, ask what language they use at home. Where the answer is Jinghpaw, a Jinghpaw interpreter is the natural choice. For speakers of Lisu, Rawang or another Kachin language, tell us early so that we can discuss the best arrangement with you.
  • Jinghpaw uses polite forms and kinship terms carefully, and respect for older people shows in speech. An interpreter who keeps the right tone helps in medical consultations and in asylum interviews, where clients may describe distressing events. Remote interpreting by video or telephone runs around the clock.

Translation

  • Jinghpaw is written in a Latin alphabet devised by the American missionary Ola Hanson at the end of the nineteenth century. It uses letter combinations such as hp, ht and hk for aspirated consonants, which matters for names and place names. Chinese Jingpo publishing uses a closely related Latin spelling. Myanmar identity papers are in Burmese and are translated from Burmese for certified use; we translate letters, consent forms and guidance into Jinghpaw.
