Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Eesti viipekeel is the sign language of the Deaf community in Estonia and has been recognised as an independent language in the Estonian Language Act.
Eesti viipekeel
esoEstonian Sign Language has its own grammar and vocabulary. Its history includes contact with Russian Sign Language during the Soviet period and with Finnish Sign Language more recently, but it is a distinct language. Some older Deaf people also know Russian Sign Language.
The Language Act recognises Estonian Sign Language as an independent language, and a national Deaf association represents the community.
Estonia's Deaf community is small, and most Deaf Estonians are bilingual in Estonian Sign Language and written Estonian. Deaf people from Estonia who have moved abroad for work may also have picked up the sign language of their new country, so ask which they prefer.

Eesti viipekeel, Estonian Sign Language, has its own grammar and vocabulary. Its history includes contact with Russian Sign Language during the Soviet period and with Finnish Sign Language more recently, but it is a distinct language, recognised as an independent language by Estonian law. The Deaf community is small and largely bilingual in sign language and written Estonian. SILA Linguists® provides Estonian Sign Language interpreting, video translation and captioning for healthcare providers, legal advisers, employers and schools, in Estonia and for Deaf Estonians who have moved abroad for work.
Most Estonian Sign Language interpreters are based in Estonia, so video remote interpreting with an interpreter there is often the most practical option abroad. For hospital appointments, legal meetings, job interviews and training, a stable connection, good lighting and a camera that shows the Deaf person's hands and face make all the difference, and we help clients test the set-up beforehand.
Some older Deaf people also know Russian Sign Language, and Russian-speaking Deaf people from Estonia may be more comfortable in it, so we ask which language the person prefers. Deaf Estonians who have worked abroad may also have learned the sign language of their new country. Where an interpreter can attend in person, we arrange on-site interpreting, and long assignments are covered by two interpreters.
We translate written Estonian or English, such as employment contracts, health information, tenancy terms and school communications, into recorded Estonian Sign Language video with Deaf translators, and translate signed video into written English or Estonian. Estonian certificates and records are translated and certified by our Estonian team.
For employers with Deaf Estonian staff in other countries, short signed videos explaining workplace procedures, safety rules and benefits are a practical way to make sure nothing important is missed.
We caption videos and transcribe recorded meetings that include signing, in Estonian or English, with each file checked by a person.
For organisations that publish information in several languages, we can deliver Estonian, Russian and English caption tracks for the same signed video, so Deaf viewers and hearing colleagues can each choose the version that suits them.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Estonian Sign Language interpreters can support healthcare providers, legal practitioners, employers and educational institutions. Because the community is small, discretion matters, and we offer a choice of interpreter wherever possible. SILA Linguists® manages each booking through one coordinator, with vetted professionals bound by confidentiality agreements and personal data handled under UK GDPR.
