Aymara (Peru) interpreting and translation

Peru has the second-largest Aymara-speaking population after Bolivia, centred on the shores of Lake Titicaca in Puno. SILA Linguists provides interpreters and translators for Peruvian Aymara speakers wherever they live.

Two forms of Aymara are spoken in Peru. Central Aymara is used around Lake Titicaca in the department of Puno, in towns such as Juli, Ilave and Yunguyo, and is close to the Aymara of La Paz in Bolivia. Southern Aymara is spoken further south and west, in parts of Moquegua and Tacna. Peruvian law treats Aymara as an official language in the areas where it predominates, alongside Spanish.

Aymara is the mother tongue of many people in southern Peru. Migration has created sizeable Aymara-speaking communities in Lima, Tacna and Arequipa, and many Puno families move back and forth between city and countryside.

How we help

Aymara (Peru) services

SILA Linguists®

Peruvian Aymara interpreting and translation services by SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® supplies Peruvian Aymara interpreters and translators to health services, legal teams, researchers and organisations running prior consultation with Indigenous communities. Peru has two Aymara languages: Central Aymara around Lake Titicaca, in Puno towns such as Juli, Ilave and Yunguyo, and Southern Aymara in parts of Moquegua and Tacna. Migration has also created large Aymara-speaking communities in Lima, Tacna and Arequipa, so we always ask where the speaker grew up before choosing a linguist.

Matching the right Aymara interpreter

Central and Southern Aymara differ in vocabulary and parts of their grammar, and Puno is bilingual country where some families speak Quechua rather than Aymara. Confirming the language and district first prevents a wasted appointment. People from rural communities may be fluent in Spanish yet still prefer Aymara for a medical history, a family matter or a statement about land.

We deliver Peruvian Aymara interpreting by telephone, available at any hour every day of the year, and by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform. For police interviews, hearings and clinical appointments we provide consecutive interpreting, and for community assemblies and consultation meetings we can arrange face-to-face interpreters or simultaneous interpreting where the format needs it. Female or male interpreters are available on request.

Aymara translation and Peruvian documents

Peru's Ministry of Education uses an official Aymara alphabet with three vowels, and we follow it for health information, school materials and consultation documents. We translate from English into Aymara and from Aymara into English, and we can review existing Aymara texts to check that Peruvian readers will understand them clearly.

Civil records, police reports and court documents from Peru are issued in Spanish. Our certified translations from Spanish carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers, so the Spanish paperwork and the Aymara materials in a case can be handled together.

Transcription for consultation and research

Prior consultation meetings, police interviews and academic fieldwork often produce hours of recorded speech. We return time-stamped Aymara transcripts with English translation, marking passages in Spanish or Quechua so the record is complete. For video, we prepare subtitles in English or Spanish. Researchers can also ask us to translate interview guides and questionnaires into Aymara before fieldwork begins, so that questions sound natural to participants.

Settings for our linguists in Peruvian Aymara

Our vetted, trained and qualified Peruvian Aymara linguists can support public health programmes, hospitals and clinics, police and justice services, solicitors, mining and energy companies preparing consultations, development agencies, universities and education projects. You deal with one project team throughout, and every linguist works under a confidentiality agreement and UK GDPR, which matters in small communities where people know one another.

Good to know

Working with Aymara (Peru)

Interpreting

  • Ask whether the speaker comes from the Titicaca area or the southern valleys, as Central and Southern Aymara differ in vocabulary and some grammar. Puno is also bilingual territory: some people grew up with Quechua rather than Aymara, so we confirm the language before booking.
  • Peruvian Aymara speakers are usually fluent in Spanish, but people from rural communities may prefer Aymara for medical histories, family matters or statements about land. Telephone and video interpreting are practical for most short appointments.

Translation

  • Peru's Ministry of Education has an official Aymara alphabet with three vowels, which is used in bilingual schooling and public information. Peruvian civil records and court documents are in Spanish, so certified translations for use abroad usually start from Spanish. We translate health, education and consultation materials into Aymara and can review existing texts for clarity with Peruvian readers.
