The Aymara of northern Chile speak a form of Central Aymara closely linked to the varieties across the border in Bolivia and southern Peru. Chilean law recognises the Aymara as one of the country's Indigenous peoples, and intercultural bilingual education programmes include the language in some northern schools.

Over the twentieth century many families moved from highland villages to coastal cities such as Arica, Iquique and Calama, and the language has lost ground to Spanish, especially among younger generations. Today most Chilean Aymara people are fluent Spanish speakers, while Aymara is used most strongly by older residents of the altiplano and in community, agricultural and ceremonial life.

How we help

Aymara (Chile) services

SILA Linguists®

Chilean Aymara interpreters and translators from SILA Linguists®

For researchers, healthcare providers, legal teams and cultural organisations working with the Aymara of northern Chile, SILA Linguists® provides interpreting, translation and transcription in Aymara and Chilean Spanish. The Aymara of Arica y Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta speak a form of Central Aymara close to the Bolivian and southern Peruvian varieties. Since most Chilean Aymara people are fluent in Spanish, we begin by asking which language the person actually prefers for the matter in hand.

Interpreting for Chilean Aymara speakers

Some older residents of the altiplano want Aymara for a medical consultation or a discussion about land, where comfort and precision count. Others are happier in Chilean Spanish, provided the interpreter understands Aymara terms for places, kinship, livestock and ceremony. We match either preference, choosing interpreters familiar with the Chilean or neighbouring Bolivian variety.

Remote interpreting is usually the most dependable option at short notice. Telephone interpreting can be booked around the clock on every day of the year, and video sessions run through the SILA Linguists® app or the platform you already use. For community consultations, research workshops and cultural events we arrange consecutive interpreting, and face-to-face interpreters where a linguist can travel. A male or female interpreter can be requested.

Translation and certified translation for Chilean Aymara projects

Aymara translation is most often needed for community consultation documents, research consent forms, information sheets and educational or heritage content. Local spellings and the official alphabet can differ, so we confirm the convention your readers expect and keep place names and family names consistent from one document to the next.

Chilean birth certificates, land titles and court papers are issued in Spanish. For use in the UK, we provide certified translations from Spanish with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. We also translate in the other direction, turning English reports and project summaries into Aymara or Spanish for the communities they concern.

Aymara transcription for research and heritage

Recorded interviews with elders, oral histories, agricultural knowledge and ceremonial speech are valuable sources for anthropologists, historians and language revitalisation projects. Our transcribers produce time-stamped Aymara transcripts with English or Spanish translations, noting where speakers move between languages. Subtitles can be prepared for documentary film and educational video, helping recordings reach audiences in Chile and internationally.

Sectors we support in northern Chile and beyond

Our vetted, trained and qualified Chilean Aymara linguists can support universities and research institutes, healthcare services, law firms dealing with land and water rights, engineering, mining and energy companies preparing community consultations, museums, broadcasters and charities. With SILA Linguists®, one project team coordinates interpreting, Spanish documents and Aymara materials together, and every linguist is bound by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Aymara (Chile)

Interpreting

  • Because nearly all Chilean Aymara speakers also use Spanish, the first question is which language the person prefers for the matter in hand. Some older speakers want Aymara for health or legal conversations where precision and comfort matter; others prefer Chilean Spanish with an interpreter who understands Aymara terms for places, kinship and land.
  • Where Aymara is requested, we look for an interpreter with experience of the Chilean or neighbouring Bolivian variety. Remote interpreting by video or telephone is often the most reliable option at short notice.

Translation

  • Chilean civil documents such as birth certificates, land titles and court papers are issued in Spanish, so certified translations for UK or European use are normally made from Spanish. Aymara translation is mainly requested for community consultation materials, research consent forms and cultural or educational content, where we agree a spelling convention with the client because local and official spellings can differ.
