Turi interpreting and translation

Turi is a Munda language spoken by the Turi community in eastern India. We provide Turi interpreters and translators and help clients confirm exactly which language a Turi speaker uses.

Turi belongs to the Munda branch of the Austroasiatic family, the same branch as Santali, Mundari and Ho. It is spoken by the Turi people, a community traditionally associated with bamboo craft, in Jharkhand and neighbouring parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. It is closely related to Mundari, and many Turi people also speak Sadri (Nagpuri), Hindi or Odia, with a gradual shift away from Turi in some villages.

The name causes confusion. The Turi of the Kurram valley in north-western Pakistan are a Pashto-speaking tribe, and their language is a variety of Pashto, not the Munda language. If a client from Pakistan or Afghanistan describes themselves as Turi, a Pashto interpreter familiar with the Kurram area is likely to be the right match.

SILA Linguists®

Turi (Munda) interpreting and language support with SILA Linguists®

Turi is a Munda language of the Austroasiatic family, closely related to Mundari and spoken by the Turi community of Jharkhand and neighbouring parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. SILA Linguists® arranges Turi interpreters and related language support for legal teams, healthcare providers, immigration services and researchers nationally and internationally, including North America, Australia and New Zealand. The name causes confusion: a Turi client from the Kurram valley in Pakistan speaks a variety of Pashto, so we always confirm where the person comes from before matching an interpreter.

Interpreting for Turi speakers

Video interpreting with the SILA Linguists® app or your existing video set-up is often the quickest way to reach a suitable linguist for a language with a small community, and it lets us confirm the match early. We can also arrange face-to-face attendance and telephone interpreting, which is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Turi speakers are usually multilingual in Sadri (Nagpuri), Hindi or Odia. Where a client is comfortable in one of these for a particular subject, relay or a direct Hindi interpreter can be discussed, but first-language interpreting remains our recommendation for immigration and asylum interviews, medical consultations and court proceedings. We can request an interpreter of the client's preferred gender where the subject is sensitive.

Translation and documents

Written Turi is uncommon and has no widely used standard; when it is written, Devanagari is the usual script. Most readers prefer material in Hindi, Odia or English, so we confirm reading preferences before starting any translation and suggest audio where literacy is limited.

Indian civil documents, such as birth certificates, Aadhaar cards and school records, are generally issued in Hindi, Odia, Bengali or English. Our certified translations include a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, the courts and colleges, and by employers.

Transcription, fieldwork and language analysis

Our transcription service suits researchers documenting Munda languages and community traditions, including the bamboo craft with which the Turi are traditionally associated, through interviews and field recordings. Transcripts come with time markers and English translation alongside, and switches into Sadri or Hindi are marked.

Where an immigration case depends on establishing where someone grew up, LADO, which analyses speech to help determine a person's origin, can be arranged through our analyst network.

Sectors we support in Turi

Our vetted, trained and qualified Turi linguists can support immigration and asylum advisers, solicitors and courts, hospitals and GP practices, universities and fieldwork projects. A single SILA Linguists® project team takes responsibility from enquiry to delivery, and every linguist is vetted and works under confidentiality undertakings, with all data processed under UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Turi

Interpreting

  • Tell us where the client comes from so we can match the right linguist: eastern India points to Turi (Munda), while Kurram in Pakistan points to Pashto.
  • Turi speakers in India are usually multilingual. Where the client is comfortable in Sadri or Hindi for a particular subject, relay or a direct Hindi interpreter can be discussed, but first-language interpreting is preferred for sensitive matters.
  • Video interpreting works well and lets us match the right interpreter quickly.

Translation

  • Written Turi is uncommon and has no widely used standard. When it is written, Devanagari is the usual script. Most readers will prefer documents in Hindi, Odia or English, so confirm reading preferences before ordering a translation. Certified translations, with a signed statement of accuracy, are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies.
