Odia is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language related to Bengali and Assamese. It is one of India's scheduled languages and has been designated a classical language by the Government of India. The official English spelling changed from Oriya to Odia, alongside the renaming of the state from Orissa to Odisha.

Standard Odia is based on the coastal speech around Cuttack and Puri. Regional varieties include Sambalpuri in western Odisha, which some speakers consider a separate language, and the speech of the southern districts bordering Andhra Pradesh. Odisha is also home to many Adivasi communities whose first language is Santali, Ho, Kui or another language.

Odia literature has a long history, and the language is used in Odisha's government, courts, schools and media. Odia vocabulary draws on Sanskrit, with influences from Farsi, Arabic and English, and some features shared with neighbouring Telugu.

How we help

Odia (Oriya) services

SILA Linguists®

Odia (Oriya) interpreting and translation services at SILA Linguists®

Odia, formerly written Oriya, just as the state of Orissa is now Odisha, is a classical language of India with a long literary history. SILA Linguists® provides Odia interpreters, translators and transcribers for healthcare, immigration, education, family and business work wherever they are based. Standard Odia follows the coastal speech of Cuttack and Puri, but Sambalpuri in western Odisha is considered by some a separate language, and many Odisha residents speak Santali, Ho or Kui first, so we check the client's language before booking.

Odia interpreters, not Bengali or Hindi substitutes

Odia is related to Bengali and Assamese, and many speakers know Hindi, but neither is an adequate substitute when a patient is giving consent, receiving a diagnosis or taking legal advice. Our Odia interpreters make sure the person hears the detail in their own language, whether the setting is a hospital, a GP surgery, an immigration interview, a university welfare meeting or a family matter.

Telephone and video interpreting make it quick to reach a qualified Odia linguist: telephone interpreting runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video sessions run through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Face-to-face sessions can also be booked, and consecutive interpreters can support business meetings with partners in Odisha's mining, steel, energy and port industries, with remote simultaneous interpreting for online events.

Odia translation and certified documents

Odia script is easy to recognise by the rounded, umbrella-shaped tops of its letters. It needs Unicode Odia fonts and careful checking of conjuncts after layout, which our team does as standard. We translate Odisha state documents, birth and marriage certificates, school and university certificates, land records, family and property papers and business correspondence, in both directions.

Older documents may use the spellings Orissa and Oriya, and we reproduce them exactly as they appear. Certified Odia translation includes a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, universities, employers, courts and other UK authorities, with names checked against passports. Odisha records needed by US immigration come with the translator's signed certificate of accuracy.

Odia transcription

We transcribe Odia interviews, recorded calls, research material and video with time stamps, adding an English translation. If a speaker uses Sambalpuri forms or switches into Hindi or English, the transcript says so, and passages in Santali, Ho or Kui are flagged so we can bring in the right specialist.

Where we can help in Odia

Our vetted, trained and qualified Odia linguists can support NHS and private healthcare, immigration advisers, universities and qualification assessors, family and property solicitors, and companies with industrial links to Odisha. One project team manages each request from start to finish, our linguists are vetted and sign confidentiality agreements, and all data is handled in line with UK GDPR. Odia interpreting is available for hospitals, universities and immigration attorneys in the United States, by video or telephone.

Good to know

Working with Odia (Oriya)

Interpreting

  • Check whether the client speaks standard Odia or Sambalpuri, or comes from a community with another first language. This helps us find the right interpreter.
  • Telephone and video interpreting make it quick to arrange a qualified Odia linguist, and face-to-face sessions can also be booked.
  • Do not assume a Bengali or Hindi interpreter will be adequate. For consent, diagnosis or legal advice, the client should hear their own language.

Translation

  • Odia is written left to right in its own script, recognisable by its rounded, umbrella-shaped letter tops. It needs Unicode Odia fonts and careful checking of conjuncts after layout.
  • We translate Odisha state documents, school and university certificates and land records for certified use. Earlier documents may show the old spellings Orissa and Oriya, which we reproduce as they appear.
