Lezgian (Lezgi) is the largest language of the Lezgic branch of the Nakh-Daghestanian, or Northeast Caucasian, family. In Russia it is spoken in the southern districts of the Republic of Dagestan, where it is one of the official languages, and in cities such as Derbent and Makhachkala. In Azerbaijan, Lezgian communities live mainly in the Qusar, Quba and Khachmaz districts, around Gabala and Ismayilli, and in Baku. The Samur river runs along the state border through the Lezgian-speaking area.

Linguists know Lezgian for its long list of grammatical cases and, unusually within its family, for having no noun classes. Its main dialect groups are Kurakh, Akhty and Quba, and the literary language is based on a southern Dagestan variety of the Kurakh group. Speakers from Dagestan are usually bilingual in Russian, while those from Azerbaijan normally speak Azerbaijani and often Russian as well.

How we help

Lezgian services

SILA Linguists®

Lezgian (Lezgi) interpreting, translation and transcription with SILA Linguists®

Lezgian is the largest language of the Lezgic branch of the Northeast Caucasian family. It is spoken in southern Dagestan, including Derbent and Makhachkala, and in Azerbaijan's Qusar, Quba and Khachmaz districts, around Gabala and Ismayilli and in Baku. SILA Linguists® provides Lezgian interpreters, translators and transcribers to asylum services, maternity and healthcare teams, police, solicitors, courts and schools in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. We ask whether the client grew up in Dagestan or Azerbaijan, and in which district.

Lezgian interpreters from the right side of the Samur

Speakers from Azerbaijan use more Azerbaijani borrowings, while those from Russia slip into Russian for official matters, and the Kurakh, Akhty and Quba dialect groups differ too. An interpreter familiar with the client's side of the border catches these differences. Some clients feel more comfortable in Russian or Azerbaijani for formal topics and switch to Lezgian for personal or emotional subjects, so we ask which language they prefer and can book bilingual support.

We provide face-to-face interpreting at asylum interviews, maternity and hospital appointments, police interviews, courts and school meetings, telephone interpreting at any hour, and video interpreting on the SILA Linguists® app or the platform you use. A female interpreter can be arranged for maternity care on request. Lezgian is known for its long list of grammatical cases, and our interpreters take particular care with locations, directions and times, which those cases express and which often matter in statements and medical histories.

Lezgian scripts and Russian or Azerbaijani documents

Lezgian is written in Cyrillic, with the palochka (Ӏ) marking ejective consonants; in Azerbaijan a Latin-based alphabet is used in some schools and publications, so we choose the script according to the reader. Passports, birth certificates and court papers from either country are in Russian or Azerbaijani, and we provide certified translations from both, each signed as accurate, accepted by UK authorities such as courts and universities. Russian or Azerbaijani papers for the United States, Canada or Australia are certified to their rules, NAATI included for Australia.

Transcribing recorded Lezgian speech

We transcribe recorded interviews, calls and messages in Lezgian with timings, tagging Russian and Azerbaijani passages and providing an English version. Where an asylum claim depends on origin in Dagestan or Azerbaijan, SILA Linguists® can also arrange LADO by specialists in Caucasian languages.

Sectors we support in Lezgian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Lezgian linguists can support asylum and immigration representatives, maternity and healthcare providers, police, solicitors and courts, and schools and family services. One coordinator plans each booking, linguists are vetted and sign non-disclosure agreements, and UK GDPR governs data handling. Because Lezgian specialists are few, early booking helps, especially for hearings. Lezgian interpreters can support immigration and refugee hearings and medical appointments in the US, Canada and Australia, by telephone or video.

Good to know

Working with Lezgian

Interpreting

  • Tell us whether the client grew up in Dagestan or in Azerbaijan, and in which district. Loanwords differ: speakers from Azerbaijan use more Azerbaijani borrowings, while those from Russia slip into Russian terms for official matters. An interpreter familiar with the client's side of the border will catch these differences.
  • Some clients feel more comfortable in Russian or Azerbaijani for formal topics and switch to Lezgian for personal or emotional subjects. Ask which language they prefer, and book a Lezgian interpreter when they want one. Video interpreting is a practical option for appointments in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Translation

  • Lezgian is written in Cyrillic, with the palochka (Ӏ) marking ejective consonants; before that it used Arabic script and, for about a decade, a Latin alphabet. In Azerbaijan a Latin-based alphabet is used in some schools and publications, so we choose the script according to the reader. Passports, birth certificates and court papers from either country are in Russian or Azerbaijani, and we provide certified translations from both.
