Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Lingua dei Segni Italiana (LIS) is the sign language of the Deaf community in Italy, formally recognised by Italian law together with tactile LIS.
Lingua dei Segni Italiana (LIS)
iseLIS is a natural language with its own grammar, that has been described in detail. Its history includes influence from French Deaf education, and it has strong regional variation, with different signs used in, for example, Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Palermo.
Italian law recognises LIS and tactile LIS (LIST). Italy was one of the last EU countries to recognise its national sign language, after many years of campaigning by the Ente Nazionale Sordi (ENS), which represents the community.

Lingua dei segni italiana, LIS, is a natural language with its own grammar, with influence from French Deaf education and strong regional variation between, for example, Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Palermo. Italy officially recognises LIS and tactile LIS (LIST). LIS is also used in San Marino. SILA Linguists® provides LIS interpreting, video translation and captioning for healthcare providers, courts and public bodies, schools and universities, tourism, cultural and museum organisations and employers, in Italy and beyond.
Regional matching matters in Italy, so please tell us where the Deaf person is from. Two interpreters are needed for long or technical assignments, and Deafblind clients may use LIS tattile, tactile LIS, which should be requested at booking so we can provide interpreters trained in it.
We provide LIS interpreting face to face, by video remote interpreting and for events, covering hospital and clinic appointments, court hearings and dealings with public bodies, schools and universities, workplace meetings, and cultural visits such as museum tours, theatre and festivals. Italian-speaking Swiss Deaf people have their own regional signs, and we can advise whether an interpreter from Italy or from Ticino suits them better.
We translate written Italian or English, including patient information, public notices, educational resources and museum and tourism content, into recorded LIS video made with Deaf translators, and translate signed LIS video into written Italian or English. Italian certificates and records are translated and certified by our Italian team.
Museums, galleries and heritage sites can commission signed guides and introductions, delivered as video clips or QR-linked content, so Deaf visitors enjoy collections on equal terms.
We caption films, webinars and recorded events in Italian or English and transcribe meetings that include signing, with each file checked by a person.
Live events, conferences and press briefings can combine LIS interpreters with real-time Italian captions, which reach deafened and hard of hearing people who do not sign. After the event we can deliver a captioned recording with the LIS interpreter in a picture-in-picture window, ready for publication on websites and social media.
Our vetted, trained and qualified LIS interpreters can support healthcare providers, courts and public bodies, schools and universities, tourism, cultural and museum organisations, and employers. SILA Linguists® coordinates interpreters and translators through one project team, works with vetted professionals, and protects each booking with confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. San Marino's Deaf community also uses LIS, and we can arrange interpreters there too.
