Hebrew is a Semitic language, related to Arabic and Aramaic. Classical Hebrew is the language of the Hebrew Bible and later rabbinic literature. Modern Hebrew was revived as an everyday spoken language from the late nineteenth century and is now the main language of Israel, used in government, education, science, media and daily life.

Modern Hebrew is spoken by native speakers and by many people who learned it as a second language, including immigrants from Russian-speaking countries, Ethiopia, France and the Arab world. Outside Israel, Jewish communities use Hebrew in prayer and study, though everyday Hebrew fluency varies widely.

Hebrew is closely tied to Jewish religious life, but Modern Hebrew is also the everyday language of many people who are not Jewish. They include Arab citizens of Israel, who often speak it as a second language alongside Arabic. Speakers in Israel come from a wide range of backgrounds, and accents vary accordingly.

SILA Linguists®

Hebrew interpreting and Hebrew translation services with SILA Linguists®

Modern Hebrew is the everyday language of Israel, used in government, science, media and business, and it is spoken by native speakers and by people who learned it after arriving from Russian-speaking countries, Ethiopia, France and the Arab world. SILA Linguists® provides Hebrew interpreters and Hebrew translators to companies, law firms, healthcare providers, universities and families in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. We also ask whether a job involves Biblical or rabbinic Hebrew, which differs from the modern language and needs a specialist.

Hebrew interpreting for business, law and healthcare

Israeli professional communication tends to be direct and informal compared with British usage. Our Hebrew interpreters convey tone accurately, so nobody sounds abrupt or stiff in a board meeting, a mediation or a medical consultation.

We supply face-to-face Hebrew interpreting for negotiations, due diligence meetings, depositions, court hearings and hospital appointments. Telephone interpreting operates around the clock, 365 days a year, and video interpreting runs via the SILA Linguists® app or Teams, Zoom and similar tools. For technology summits, investor events and academic conferences we provide consecutive and simultaneous Hebrew interpreters, including remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI).

Hebrew translation, certification and localisation

Hebrew is written right to left without vowel points in everyday text, and numbers, Latin-script names and product codes run left to right inside Hebrew sentences. We check bidirectional layout in the final typeset file. Our translators handle commercial contracts, shareholder agreements, patents, technical documentation, medical reports and academic papers in both directions.

Certified Hebrew translation of Israeli birth, marriage and divorce certificates, court documents and academic records comes with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, universities and employers. For Israeli technology and life sciences companies entering English-speaking markets, and for brands targeting Israel, we localise software, websites and marketing copy, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing available for large volumes.

Hebrew transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Hebrew meetings, interviews, podcasts and evidential recordings, delivering time-stamped transcripts and English translations, and we subtitle Hebrew and English video for training, marketing and media. Our transcribers flag slang, abbreviations and English loanwords, which are common in Israeli workplace speech, and they record speaker changes clearly so that minutes and evidence remain easy to follow.

Good to know

Working with Hebrew

Interpreting

  • Israeli business and professional communication tends to be direct and informal compared with British or North American usage. A good interpreter conveys tone accurately without making speakers sound abrupt or, in the other direction, overly formal.
  • For religious texts, tell us in advance, as Biblical and rabbinic Hebrew differ from the modern language.
  • Hebrew interpreting is available face to face, by video, by telephone and for conferences.

Translation

  • Hebrew is written right to left in the 22-letter Hebrew alphabet, with five letters taking a special form at the end of a word. Everyday text is written without vowel points (niqqud), but they are used in children's books, poetry, religious texts and when a word could be misread.
  • Layouts must handle bidirectional text, as numbers, Latin-script names and product codes run left to right inside right-to-left sentences. We check this in the final typeset file.
  • We translate Israeli certificates, court documents, commercial contracts, patents and medical records, with certified translations accepted by UK authorities including the Home Office, the courts and universities, and by international bodies.
