Gagauz belongs to the Oghuz branch of Turkic, the same branch as Turkish, Azerbaijani and Turkmen, and it is closer to the Balkan Turkish dialects than to standard Turkish. Its speakers are Orthodox Christians, and centuries of contact have given it vocabulary and some grammar from Slavic languages, Romanian and Greek. A Turkish speaker can follow much everyday Gagauz, but not all of it.

Gagauz is an official language of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri), alongside Romanian and Russian. Russian is the dominant language of administration and much daily life there, and many younger people are more confident in Russian than in Gagauz. Gagauz was written in Cyrillic for decades and later switched to a Latin alphabet modelled on Turkish, with additional letters such as ä, ê and ţ.

Gagauz services

SILA Linguists®

Gagauz interpreters, translation and transcription with SILA Linguists®

Gagauz is a Turkic language of Orthodox Christian communities in southern Moldova's Gagauzia, the Odesa region of Ukraine and pockets of Bulgaria, Romania and Russia. SILA Linguists® arranges Gagauz interpreters, translators and transcribers for employers, solicitors, health services and councils across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Related to Turkish but shaped by Romanian, Slavic and Greek, Gagauz is only partly understood by Turkish speakers, and many Gagauz people are more confident in Russian, so we always ask which language the client prefers.

Interpreting in Gagauz or the client's best language

Older people from Gagauz villages are often most comfortable in Gagauz, while younger speakers may prefer Russian for official matters. Speakers from Ukraine and Moldova also use different loanwords. We take these details at booking so the interpreter we send is the right fit, and we can provide a Russian or Romanian interpreter instead where that serves the client better.

Gagauz interpreting is available face to face for employment tribunals, immigration appointments, GP surgeries, hospital clinics and social services, and remotely by telephone, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, or by video. Because Gagauz linguists are few, video interpreting is often the fastest way to secure an experienced interpreter, wherever the meeting is held. A female or male interpreter can be arranged where the subject calls for it.

Gagauz translation and certified translation

Documents from Moldova are usually in Romanian or Russian, and some from Gagauzia carry Gagauz alongside them. We check each page and assign the right translator, so a single bundle of birth certificates, employment records and court papers is handled within one project.

Modern Gagauz is written in a Latin alphabet modelled on Turkish, with extra letters such as ä, ê and ţ, after decades of Cyrillic use. Older family documents may therefore appear in Cyrillic. For community information we can advise whether readers would be better reached in Gagauz, Russian or both. Certified versions are signed and declared accurate, the form accepted by UK authorities, so a Moldovan employment record or court order can go straight into a visa or tribunal file.

Transcription of Gagauz recordings

Recorded interviews, phone calls and messages in Gagauz are transcribed with time stamps and translated into English. Conversations often slide between Gagauz, Russian and Romanian, and our transcribers label each language so the record stays clear.

Good to know

Working with Gagauz

Interpreting

  • Ask which language the client prefers. Many Gagauz people speak Russian fluently, and some prefer it for official matters, while others, especially older people from villages, are most at ease in Gagauz. Interpreting in the client's best language gives the most reliable account.
  • Gagauz speakers from Ukraine and from Moldova may use different loanwords, so tell us the region so we can match the right linguist. Video and telephone interpreting are well suited to this language.

Translation

  • Documents from Moldova are usually in Romanian or Russian, and some from Gagauzia carry Gagauz alongside them. Check which language each document uses. Translations into Gagauz use the Latin alphabet; ask whether the reader would prefer Russian or Cyrillic material. Certified translations, with a signed statement of accuracy, are accepted by UK authorities including the Home Office, the courts and universities, and by international bodies.
