Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Deaf people in French-speaking Switzerland use a sign language they call Langue des signes française (LSF), a regional form closely related to French Sign Language and sometimes called Swiss-French Sign Language.
Langue des signes française (LSF), Suisse romande
ssrSwitzerland has three sign languages, matching its main language regions: Deutschschweizer Gebärdensprache (DSGS), Langue des signes française (LSF) in Suisse romande and Lingua dei segni italiana (LIS) in Ticino. The Swiss Deaf community regards all three as national sign languages. The signing of Suisse romande is closely related to French Sign Language from France but has its own regional vocabulary; views differ on whether to treat it as a variety of LSF or a separate language.
Switzerland does not yet have federal legal recognition of its sign languages. Parliament has asked for recognition, the Federal Council has proposed amending the disability equality law, and a separate framework law has also been proposed. Some cantons, such as Geneva and Zurich, mention sign language in their constitutions, and the three Swiss sign languages are listed as intangible cultural heritage.

Switzerland has three sign languages matching its main language regions, and in French-speaking Switzerland (Suisse romande) Deaf people use a signing closely related to French Sign Language but with its own regional vocabulary. Opinions differ on whether it is a variety of LSF or a separate language, and it is counted among Switzerland's three national sign languages. SILA Linguists® provides interpreting, signed video translation and captioning for public administration, healthcare providers, international organisations in Geneva, schools and employers.
Interpreters from France may be understood, but a Swiss interpreter familiar with local signs and institutions is usually preferable for legal and medical appointments, where cantonal procedures and Swiss terminology come up. We provide interpreting on site and by video remote interpreting for public administration, hospital and clinic appointments, schools and vocational training, and workplace meetings.
At events in Geneva with international participants, International Sign is often used alongside the national sign language, and we can arrange both. For conferences hosted by international organisations, co-working teams cover long sessions, and we can add interpreters for other sign languages as needed. Tell us the Deaf person's canton and school background so we can match regional signs.
We translate written French or English, such as cantonal information, patient leaflets, training material and accessible web content, into recorded signed video with Deaf translators from Suisse romande, and translate signed video into written French or English. Swiss certificates and records are translated and certified by our French team.
National organisations often need information in all three Swiss sign languages. We can coordinate versions for Suisse romande, German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino in one project.
We caption videos, webinars and conference recordings in French or English and produce written transcripts of signed and spoken content, each checked by a person.
For conferences in Geneva and Lausanne, real-time French or English captions can run alongside the sign language interpreters, so that hard of hearing and deafened participants who do not sign can follow as well. Post-event, we can turn the recording into a captioned video with the interpreter shown in a window, ready to publish for those who could not attend.
Our vetted, trained and qualified French Swiss Sign Language interpreters can support public administration, healthcare providers, international organisations, schools and employers. SILA Linguists® coordinates every booking through one project team, with vetted professionals, confidentiality agreements and personal data handled under UK GDPR.
