Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Cypriot Sign Language is the sign language of the Deaf community in the Republic of Cyprus, recognised by law.
Κυπριακή Νοηματική Γλώσσα (ΚΝΓ)
Cypriot Sign Language developed through Deaf education on the island and through close contact with Greek Sign Language, with which it shares much vocabulary and grammar. Views differ on whether it should be treated as a separate language or as a variety closely related to Greek Sign Language, but the Republic of Cyprus recognises it by name.
The Recognition of Cypriot Sign Language Law recognises it as the language of the Deaf community. The Deaf community has worked on dictionaries and interpreter training. Turkish Cypriot Deaf people in the north may use different signing, influenced by Turkish Sign Language.

Opinions differ on whether it is a separate language or a closely related variety, but the Republic of Cyprus recognises it by name in law. SILA Linguists® provides Cypriot Sign Language interpreting, signed video and captions for healthcare providers, legal advisers, schools and public services in Cyprus, across Europe and wherever Cypriot Deaf people live.
For some appointments a Greek Sign Language interpreter may be understood, but local signs differ, and we always check with the Deaf person. Turkish Cypriot Deaf clients may need an interpreter familiar with their own signing or with Turkish Sign Language, so tell us which community the person belongs to.
We provide Cypriot Sign Language interpreting on site and by video for hospital and clinic appointments, legal matters, school and university meetings and public services. Video remote interpreting with an interpreter based in Cyprus is often the most practical option for short appointments elsewhere in Europe. Our interpreters keep up with current Cypriot vocabulary.
We translate patient information, legal letters, school communications and public notices into recorded Cypriot Sign Language video with Deaf translators, and translate signed video into written English or Greek. Cypriot certificates and records in Greek or Turkish are translated and certified by our Greek and Turkish teams.
Cyprus also attracts many visitors and residents from abroad, and hotels, clinics and public services sometimes need signed information in more than one sign language. We can combine Cypriot Sign Language with Greek, British or Turkish Sign Language versions in a single project, keeping terminology consistent across all of them.
Recorded meetings, information films and statements can be captioned and transcribed in English or Greek, with each file checked by a person before delivery. Turkish Cypriot Deaf people in the north may use different signing, influenced by Turkish Sign Language, and we take that into account in any video aimed at them.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Cypriot Sign Language interpreters can support healthcare providers, legal practitioners, schools and universities, and public services. Because the island's Deaf community is small and closely connected, discretion matters, and Deaf clients may know an interpreter personally; we offer a choice of interpreter where possible. SILA Linguists® handles every booking through one project team, with vetted professionals, confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR protection.
