Mirpuri interpreting and translation

Mirpuri is the form of Pahari-Pothwari spoken in and around Mirpur in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and it is widely heard as a home language among British Pakistani families. We provide Mirpuri interpreters for spoken communication and arrange translation into the written language your reader uses.

Mirpuri is a variety of Pahari-Pothwari, an Indo-Aryan language of the Lahnda group spoken across the Pothohar plateau and the southern districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It shares a great deal with Western Punjabi and Hindko, and speakers themselves may call their language Mirpuri, Pahari, Pothwari or simply Punjabi. None of these names is wrong; they reflect local identity rather than strict linguistic boundaries.

Large-scale migration from the Mirpur area to Britain grew after the construction of the Mangla Dam, which flooded many villages. As a result, Mirpuri is spoken by several generations in cities such as Bradford, Birmingham, Manchester, Luton and Glasgow, and British-born speakers often mix it with English and Urdu.

How we help

Mirpuri services

SILA Linguists®

Mirpuri interpreting, translation and audio services by SILA Linguists®

Mirpuri, the speech of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, has been spoken in British cities for three generations, and SILA Linguists® supplies Mirpuri interpreters to public services and legal teams throughout the UK, and in North America, Australia and New Zealand too. Families may call the language Mirpuri, Pahari, Pothwari or simply Punjabi. We ask how your client describes it and where the family is from, then match an interpreter who knows that speech, including the English and Urdu words that colour everyday British Mirpuri.

Mirpuri interpreters for health, family and court settings

Older relatives often follow Urdu only partly, so a Mirpuri interpreter makes a real difference in consent discussions, maternity appointments, mental health assessments, safeguarding meetings and family or criminal court hearings. Face-to-face interpreting is usually best for long assessments and for elderly clients, while telephone interpreting is on hand day and night, weekends and bank holidays included, and video interpreting works in the SILA Linguists® app, or on any secure platform you prefer.

For community consultations and training sessions we can supply consecutive interpreters or simultaneous interpreting, including RSI for online events. Many women prefer a female interpreter in women's health and family matters, and we arrange this whenever you ask. Our interpreters handle sensitive vocabulary around family honour, bereavement and illness with tact.

Written material for Mirpuri speakers

Mirpuri has no widely used standard spelling, so written information is usually best delivered in Urdu, in Nastaliq script, or in clear English. Where a campaign calls for it, we can render text into informal Mirpuri in Arabic-based letters and recommend testing it with readers first.

Documents issued in Pakistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir, such as birth and marriage certificates, land records and school papers, are generally in Urdu or English. We provide certified translation of these with a signed and dated accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, immigration officials and universities, and by employers.

Audio, voiceover and transcription

For audiences who do not read comfortably, a recorded message is often far more effective than a leaflet. We produce Mirpuri voiceovers for health campaigns, school information and council services, and we transcribe Mirpuri recordings, such as police interviews, family calls and research interviews, into time-stamped English transcripts that flag where speakers switch into Urdu or English.

Settings for our linguists in Mirpuri

Our vetted, trained and qualified Mirpuri linguists can support GP practices, hospitals, health visitors, social workers, family courts, criminal defence solicitors, schools and housing teams, particularly in communities with long roots in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. A named project manager at SILA Linguists® manages each booking, our linguists are vetted and bound by signed confidentiality agreements, with data handled under UK GDPR, and you can request the same interpreter for continuity across a series of appointments.

Good to know

Working with Mirpuri

Interpreting

  • Mirpuri is mainly a spoken language, so it is the right choice for interpreting when a client is more comfortable at home in Mirpuri than in Urdu. Older relatives in particular may follow Urdu only partly, which matters in consent conversations, safeguarding meetings and court hearings.
  • Tell us whether the client describes their language as Mirpuri, Pahari, Pothwari or Punjabi, and where the family comes from. An interpreter who knows the Mirpur and Kotli speech and its English and Urdu borrowings will be more accurate than a general Punjabi or Urdu interpreter. A preferred interpreter gender can be requested, which is often appreciated in women's health and family settings.

Translation

  • There is no widely used standard spelling for Mirpuri. Written material for Mirpuri speakers is normally produced in Urdu, in Nastaliq script, or in clear English; a translation into informal Mirpuri in Arabic-based letters is possible for leaflets or campaigns, but its readers should be tested first. For audiences with limited literacy, recorded audio or video in Mirpuri is often more effective, and our team can arrange voiceover.
  • Documents issued in Pakistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir are usually in Urdu or English, and certified translation is provided from those languages.
