Mingrelian, or Megrelian, is a Kartvelian language of Samegrelo in western Georgia, closely related to Laz and more distantly to Georgian. We provide Mingrelian interpreters and translators for health, legal, asylum and family settings.

xmfMingrelian, called margaluri nina by its speakers, belongs to the Zan branch of the Kartvelian (South Caucasian) family, together with Laz; Georgian and Svan form the other branches. It is spoken in the Samegrelo region of western Georgia, in and around towns such as Zugdidi, Senaki, Martvili and Khobi, in the Gali district of Abkhazia, and by families who have moved to Tbilisi and abroad. Although Georgian and Mingrelian share much vocabulary, they are not mutually intelligible.
Mingrelian has no official status and no written standard. Children are schooled in Georgian, which is also the language of administration, so almost every Mingrelian speaker is fluent in Georgian and Mingrelian lives mainly at home, in villages and among friends. Its two dialect areas are Zugdidi-Samurzakano and Senaki. Mingrelian is considered an endangered language.

Georgian and Mingrelian share much vocabulary but are not mutually intelligible, and Mingrelian is considered endangered. SILA Linguists® provides Mingrelian and Georgian interpreters, transcribers and translators to healthcare providers, care services, asylum representatives, courts and police in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
Almost every Mingrelian speaker is fluent in Georgian, the language of schooling and administration, so in most formal settings a Georgian interpreter is the natural choice. A Mingrelian interpreter helps when an older relative is more at ease in Mingrelian, for example in care for older people or a hospital stay, when a statement or recording contains Mingrelian speech, or when the client simply asks for one. An interpreter who works in both languages can follow a conversation that moves between them.
We arrange face-to-face interpreting for care assessments, hospital and GP visits, asylum interviews, court hearings and police interviews, and remote interpreting by phone at any hour or by video on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Tell us whether the speaker is from Samegrelo, with its Zugdidi-Samurzakano and Senaki dialects, or from the Gali area.
When Mingrelian is written, the Georgian Mkhedruli alphabet is used with a few extra letters, and spelling varies from writer to writer. Official documents from Georgia are in Georgian, and we provide certified Georgian translation, signed and dated as accurate, accepted by UK authorities, educational institutions and international bodies.
In Mingrelian we mainly transcribe and translate recordings, voice messages and interview material, agreeing spelling conventions first. Each transcript is time-coded, with Georgian and Russian passages marked and an English version alongside, which is valuable for police, solicitors and family courts. Where an asylum claim turns on origin, SILA Linguists® can arrange LADO.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Mingrelian and Georgian linguists can support healthcare and care providers for older people, asylum and immigration representatives, courts and police, and families dealing with community matters. One coordinator handles each request, specialists are vetted and sign non-disclosure agreements, and personal data is protected under UK GDPR. Because Mingrelian has no official status and no written standard, we keep a project glossary of agreed spellings for names and places, so every transcript and translation in a case reads consistently.
