We are recruiting freelance Welsh translators and interpreters for public sector, court, health, education and business work, including simultaneous interpreting at meetings.

  • Type Freelance (self-employed)
  • Work Remote (video and telephone) and on-site
  • Where United Kingdom

About the role

Public bodies in Wales have legal duties to provide services in Welsh, so councils, health boards, universities and many companies publish in both languages and run bilingual meetings. Anyone may speak Welsh in court in Wales, and simultaneous Welsh to English interpreting is a routine part of council, tribunal and board meetings.

Translation is the largest area of work: policies, reports, websites, apps, letters and marketing. Interpreting includes simultaneous interpreting with headsets at meetings and events, consecutive interpreting in health and legal settings, and remote interpreting on video platforms.

What you will do

  • Translate English into natural, current Welsh, following the client's style guide and terminology lists.
  • Provide simultaneous Welsh to English interpreting at meetings, hearings and events, on site or online.
  • Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
  • Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
  • Work remotely by video or telephone, or on site at the client's premises, arriving prepared and on time.
  • Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.

What we are looking for

  • Fluent Welsh and English, with an excellent standard of written Welsh.
  • A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience. Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
  • Membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (the Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters) is welcome but not required.
  • A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
  • The right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
  • A dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.

What we offer

  • Flexible freelance work that fits around your schedule.
  • A mix of remote (video and telephone) and on-site assignments.
  • Fair pay for your expertise and time.
  • Professional development to keep your skills current.
  • A supportive operations team to help with bookings and questions.
  • Varied work across sectors, from healthcare and law to government and business.
