Freelance Malayalam Interpreter and Translator
We are looking for freelance Malayalam interpreters and translators for healthcare, legal, employment and family assignments. Work is available by video, by telephone and on site.

About the role
Malayalam is the language of Kerala in southern India, and the UK's Malayali community includes many nurses and care workers from Kerala. Many clients speak good English at work but prefer Malayalam for medical, legal or family matters, and their relatives who join them may speak little English.
Assignments include maternity and paediatric care, GP appointments, employment disputes, immigration matters and school meetings. Translation work covers certificates, educational records and legal documents in Malayalam script.
What you will do
- Interpret for families in maternity, paediatric and school settings, explaining terms clearly.
- Translate Malayalam certificates and records for immigration and employment use.
- Follow professional standards of accuracy, impartiality and confidentiality on every assignment.
- Prepare for each booking by reviewing the brief and researching specialist terminology in advance.
- Check every translation against the source before delivery and meet agreed deadlines.
- Take on transcription and translation of Malayalam recordings for legal, research and media clients, if this work interests you.
What we are looking for
- Full professional fluency in both Malayalam and English.
- Relevant qualifications such as the DPSI, DPI or a translation degree, or equivalent professional experience; CIOL, ITI or NRPSI membership is welcome.
- Reading and writing in Malayalam script.
- Willingness to undergo a DBS check, which is required for some assignments, such as those involving children or vulnerable adults.
- For on-site work in the UK, the right to work in the UK.
- Reliable internet access and suitable equipment (computer or phone with headset) for video and telephone work.
