Freelance Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Interpreter and Translator

SILA Linguists needs freelance Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin interpreters and translators for legal, healthcare, immigration and business assignments. Please tell us which standards and scripts you work in.

  • Type Freelance (self-employed)
  • Work Remote (video and telephone) and on-site
  • Where United Kingdom

About the role

Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin are closely related. The standards are mutually intelligible but differ in vocabulary, in ekavian and ijekavian pronunciation, and in script: Serbian uses both Cyrillic and Latin. Clients often expect an interpreter of their own standard, so please tell us which you work in.

Assignments take place in courts, police interviews, immigration and family law matters, health care and business. Translators work on civil and legal documents from all four countries, which must use the correct standard for official purposes.

What you will do

  • Interpret in the standard the client prefers, with care over terms that differ between Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin.
  • Translate official documents into the correct standard and script for the receiving authority.
  • Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
  • Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
  • Translate and proofread documents carefully, querying unclear source text rather than guessing.
  • Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.

What we are looking for

  • Native or near-native fluency in Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian and English, spoken and written.
  • A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience. Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
  • Fluency in at least one of Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian or Montenegrin, and reading of both Latin and Cyrillic scripts.
  • A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
  • The right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
  • A dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.

What we offer

  • Flexible freelance work that fits around your schedule.
  • A mix of remote (video and telephone) and on-site assignments.
  • Fair pay for your expertise and time.
  • Professional development to keep your skills current.
  • A supportive operations team to help with bookings and questions.
  • Varied work across sectors, from healthcare and law to government and business.
