Freelance vacancy

Freelance Mauritian Creole Interpreter and Translator

SILA Linguists is recruiting freelance Mauritian Creole (Kreol Morisien) interpreters and translators for healthcare, legal, immigration and community work, remotely or on site.

  • Type Freelance (self-employed)
  • Work Remote (video and telephone) and on-site
  • Where United Kingdom

About the role

Mauritian Creole (Kreol Morisien) is the everyday language of Mauritius and is close to the creoles of Rodrigues and the Chagos Islands. It is French-based, but its grammar differs a great deal from French, so a French interpreter is not a substitute. The people you interpret for may include Mauritian and Chagossian families, many of whom have settled in the UK.

Assignments include GP and hospital care, school meetings, housing and benefits appointments, immigration and nationality matters, and solicitor meetings. Translators work on Mauritian certificates, which are usually in French or English.

What you will do

  • Interpret between English and Mauritian Creole, including Chagossian and Rodriguan speech.
  • Translate Kreol statements and Mauritian documents in French into English, where qualified.
  • Keep everything you hear and read on assignments strictly confidential, and remain impartial throughout.
  • Build and maintain your own glossaries for the sectors you work in.
  • Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.
  • Produce accurate transcripts and English translations of recorded Mauritian Creole speech, for example police interviews or research recordings.

What we are looking for

  • Native or near-native fluency in Mauritian Creole and English.
  • The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting), DPI (Diploma in Police Interpreting) or an equivalent qualification is an advantage; CIOL or ITI membership is welcome.
  • French is an advantage; Bhojpuri is welcome.
  • Willingness to complete a DBS check for assignments in healthcare, education or with vulnerable people.
  • Right to work in the UK if you will take on-site assignments in the UK.
  • A reliable internet connection, headset and quiet, private workspace for remote assignments.

What we offer

  • Remote work by video and telephone, plus on-site bookings.
  • Fair compensation for your skills and time.
  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • Help from our operations team before and after assignments.
  • Varied assignments across healthcare, legal, government, finance and more.
  • Flexible working: choose the assignments that suit your availability.
