Freelance Turkish Interpreter and Translator

About the role

Turkish speakers in the UK include people from Turkey and from Cyprus, as well as many Kurdish families from Turkey who use Turkish in official settings. Turkish Cypriot speech has its own vocabulary and pronunciation, and interpreters should be ready for it.

Work includes immigration and asylum interviews, solicitors' appointments, criminal and family courts, GP and hospital care, and business translation such as contracts and company documents.

What you will do

• Interpret for mainland Turkish and Turkish Cypriot speakers, adjusting to regional vocabulary.
• Translate legal and corporate Turkish documents with consistent terminology.
• Follow professional standards of accuracy, impartiality and confidentiality on every assignment.
• Prepare for each booking by reviewing the brief and researching specialist terminology in advance.
• Check every translation against the source before delivery and meet agreed deadlines.
• Take on transcription and translation of Turkish recordings for legal, research and media clients, if this work interests you.

What we are looking for

• Full professional fluency in both Turkish and English.
• Relevant qualifications such as the DPSI, DPI or a translation degree, or equivalent professional experience; CIOL, ITI or NRPSI membership is welcome.
• Kurdish (Kurmanji) is an advantage for some immigration and community assignments.
• Willingness to undergo a DBS check, which is required for some assignments, such as those involving children or vulnerable adults.
• For on-site work in the UK, the right to work in the UK.
• Reliable internet access and suitable equipment (computer or phone with headset) for video and telephone work.
