Freelance Iranian Azerbaijani (South Azerbaijani) Interpreter and Translator

  • Type Freelance (self-employed)
  • Work Remote (video and telephone) and on-site
  • Where United Kingdom

About the role

Iranian (South) Azerbaijani is spoken in north-west Iran, around Tabriz, Urmia and Ardabil, and by Azerbaijani communities in Tehran. It is written, when written at all, in the Arabic-based script and contains many Farsi loanwords. This sets it apart from the Azerbaijani of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which is written in Latin script and influenced by Russian. Most clients also speak Farsi, but many prefer to give detailed accounts in their mother tongue.

Typical assignments include asylum interviews, solicitor appointments, tribunal hearings, mental health care and GP visits. Translators work on documents that are usually in Farsi, with Azerbaijani used in personal statements and messages.

What you will do

  • Interpret for clients from north-west Iran, recognising Farsi loanwords and regional speech from Tabriz, Urmia and Ardabil.
  • Translate Farsi-script documents and statements, using consistent spellings of names and places.
  • Keep everything you hear and read on assignments strictly confidential, and remain impartial throughout.
  • Build and maintain your own glossaries for the sectors you work in.
  • Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.
  • Produce accurate transcripts and English translations of recorded Iranian Azerbaijani speech, for example police interviews or research recordings.

What we are looking for

  • Native or near-native fluency in Iranian Azerbaijani and English, with good Farsi.
  • The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting), DPI (Diploma in Police Interpreting) or an equivalent qualification is an advantage; CIOL or ITI membership is welcome.
  • Knowledge of the Azerbaijani of the Republic of Azerbaijan or of Turkish is an advantage.
  • Willingness to complete a DBS check for assignments in healthcare, education or with vulnerable people.
  • Right to work in the UK if you will take on-site assignments in the UK.
  • A reliable internet connection, headset and quiet, private workspace for remote assignments.

What we offer

  • Remote work by video and telephone, plus on-site bookings.
  • Fair compensation for your skills and time.
  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • Help from our operations team before and after assignments.
  • Varied assignments across healthcare, legal, government, finance and more.
  • Flexible working: choose the assignments that suit your availability.

Questions

Do I need Farsi as well?

Good Farsi is expected, because most documents from Iran are written in Farsi and many clients move between the two languages.

Can I work remotely?

Yes. Many assignments are delivered by video or telephone, and on-site work in the UK is also available.
